soo apparently my mechanic thinks mine has given up ( auto diesel) , originaly qouted me 3 grand to source a 2nd hand one and fit it ,from memory the case was going to be 1800,
Ive managed to find one for 500 but im still looking at 2grand fitted nearly once i get it down from auckland,

Has anyone had experience with replacing one? Im unsure what to do ,trying to keep it cheap.

Cheers

(i tried using search but didnt have time to look through everythin  )

Cheeky bugger.

You can use a kzn185 surf transfer case. If you replace the selector rods etc from your existing transfer all is good, (there may be a thread on it on here, I can't remember if I did one or not). The ctr diff in these rigs is a major weak point (and is well known), the surf one is no better as it is exactly the same. The only differance is that the prado has a solid spacer where the selector fork etc goes on the srf. $2k to fit one is outrageous, take it to another guy who knows what he is doing.

There you go, there is a link to how I did mine.

Quick update, havent been using it for a while

Mechanic took out the front drive shaft said it would relieve some of the tension on the the transfer case. Ive now realised he's made the assumption that the transfer case is buggered with out taking it apart ,could it be any thing else? Can any one recommend a mechanic in chch i could get it checked out at.
Cheers

Clunking while driving and turning, can feel one on the wheels slipping occasionally just seem to be making weird bad sounds from memory. Probably doesn't help much haha.
Oh and couldn't engage into 4wd , well the light on the dash wouldn't go on, took ages for me to get it out of 4wd the last time it did go in
