Hi all
Engine will turn over fine, battery is OK. If you pump the accelerator eventually it will start up. Once it gets going and motor is warm no problems starting. Vehicle undercover day and night. Done 135,000km and has been serviced regularly all its life. Have owned since new and its had no major problems so far except alternator needed reconditioning approx 3 years ago.
Any suggestions as to what the problem might be? Someone has suggested glow plugs may need replacing. If that's the case how hard are they to replace on this engine? (boyfriend is a petrol head but doesn't know much about diesel motors!)
Thanks.

Sounds Like glow plugs,
They are easy to replace and generall cost abou $20 each.
you can test them by using some jumper leads and putting the negative on the threaded outer casing and the positive on the small peice at the end where the nut goes on, they should glow red within about 6 seconds.

could also be the diesel fuel rail not up to pressure. Most of the time it is glow plugs but my parents hilux occasionaly looses fuel rail pressure.
There is usualy a little pump on the top of the diesel fuel filter assy (is on the hilux) 15 or 20 pumps and all good. Its loosing pressure somewhere but so far noone can find it.

Good news, the Terrano is fixed! Quick trip to Repco to purchase 4 glowplugs ($190 approx) then began removing parts to gain access to glow plugs and discovered the diesel engine equivalent of a HT lead (?) was snapped at the terminal where it connects to the glow plugs. Replaced that and it started first pop! Back to Repco to return said glow plugs as not required. Least we know how to replace them now for when they do eventually need it.
Thanks for your help.
