2lt - 2.4
2lte - 2.4efi
1kzte - 3L
3L & 5L - 2.8 reliable motors
1st 3 have alloy heads which can crack. 3L & 5L are reliable but not as peppy as 2.4. 1kz is good but a high heat motor.

3L is 2.8 litre
5L is the 3.0 litre
The 2.8 (3L) is a good workhorse that won't give too much trouble, and is cheap as chips to work on.
My 5 cents is go for a 3L

yep, go a 4runner, good basic surf with 2.8 diesel, turbo it if you want more power.

Only the 1kz has an alloy head.
a 5L+ turbo is the key, reliable engine with power.. but for some strange reason they are bloody expensive!

servicing and general maintanance is key with any diesel.
if its turbo put a larger exhaust on it to free it up and get the heat away from the head abit better, thatl help alot.
my 2lte is definately not gutless..its no 1uz,but it gets the job done.but does need a bigger exhaust asap..
was gonna say the 1kzte only had the alloy head, and some had poor factory castings like mazda proceeds,so were common for heads going on them..
find a cheap 1kzte truck and put a new kiwi made head on it and your away laughing..

before you go asking for people's opinions an a 3L+or-T vs a 1KZ vs a cast 2L vs or a 2LT+-e or a 1KD you need to identify what you are looking for in a vehicle. Its pretty easy to google the engines and common mods or weaknesses. have a think
What comfort level is your minimum / preferred, for what type of driving are you going to be doing? All On road. Once a month? Towing? farm wagon? Mawl prowler?
How much are you going to spend?
What mechanical abilities and time and tools you have to do any modfications [ as in turboing a 3L]?
How many people does it need to comfortably fit an likely hood of journeys?
I wouldnt go for the 300k surf, not because its at 300k but for the same price you can get something a lot newer or with less ks. Either way less chance of services not bring forgotten..

Mechanical ability not an issue, was thinking about the 2.4 and juicing it up a little maybe or should i get the 2.8 and turbo it ?
