Wanting to upgrade the cv's a little, can't afford Cormolly or anything yet but I've picked up a pair of prado cv's (the ones with a lip round the outside edge)...

Has anyone fitted these into hilux housing?

How much trimming is required??

Is it just a little trim top and bottom or is it right arround the inside at the back??

Before you ask, I've tried the search function, hilux and prado are to common-a-word for the search function...

I'm pretty certain they are the same as the 75 series.... they can be made to fit but it takes alot of work with an electric die grinder... took me the better part of a day to do each side and I killed a carbide burr
I wouldn't bother to attempt this with an air die grinder unless you have top qaulity tools and big air

Thanks, I've got big industrial air compressor (Fun of working in a factory!!), and can borrow a high quality air grinder and bits.
Been told by others it's a drop in thing, with no work to do, had a trial fit, it's not gonna drop in!!

mate if it was that easy we would all be running them

no sorrry there is to be a shit load of grinding to be done to get them to fit then a even bigger job cleaning all the grinding swarf out so it does start chewing other seal etc out

Thanks, Was wanting to hear form others that have done it, been told a few different things from different people so was good to hear from Reece who's done it before.

Am gonna give it a go, just do a bit here and there while work's quiet, Time and effort is something I can put into the truck, big $$ for Cromolly isn't!

the catch I found with it is if you don't take enough out it pushes the CV forward so when you think you have enough out, blue the CV, assemble the swivel housing and stub axle and try turning at lock if your like me it'll take a few try's to get it


Oh and those that have dropped them in are telling the truth.... some aftermarket maker's use the same part number for the hilux, prado and some cruiser... so there fancy upgrade isn't
Just before you start ring toyota and get them to check that the part numbers are the same on the 75 series and prado I'd hate to set you wrong

Been told they are 71 series CV's.
Got one side done during the week, Used air die grinder, carbide bit and modified grinding wheel, worked well. Did little bits here and there after work each day, lost count of how many times I assembled/disassembled it all to check clearance's!!

Will pull appart one night this week to see if thee was any rubbing during it's test drive on sunday.

Will do other side this week as well.

Every Cv that I've seen crack or blow appart, it's started near the ball bearing, Prado have about 7.5mm at the thinnest part, hilux only 4.5mm at thinnest part. (Also found a bit of variety in the thickness of the hilux one's I've got round the place...) Prado are only about 2mm wider overall though so you have to do some clearance work but not to much.

The procedure took ages, I lost count of how many times I assembled and dismantled the swivel housing to check for clearance's! After clearing out enough for smooth rotation of Cv, everythign was thoroughly cleaned and reassembled with rebuild kit thrown in for good measure.

having access to industrial air compressor and high quality air grinder and appropriate bits made the job go a bit easier though...

After the next outing I'll strip everything down again and inspect for rubbing and wear.
