ATTN Landcruiser owners!pls share yr exp.re PINION SEAL,BEAR
hi,all!as per my prev.post in toyota tread i am replacing pinion seals .diffs in place.73 cruzer 1991,1hz man, based in Albany.
i got both rear and front pinion seals out.
to put everything together i need to replace non-reusable crush sleeves which set preload in the pinion bearings.to get the sleeve out i need to pull the bearing out.
i managed to pull out rear pinion bearing without any tools,
but front pinion bearing wont come out ,bastard!
i smacked front pinion with a hammer throu a soft drift as advised by Simon, bearing did loosen a bit on the shaft, but wont come out anyway.
my book says use universal puller with fabricated legs(have a pic of one in the book)
IF anyone had experience pulling the bastard out and may be has a puller ,pls let me know
a puller from auto stores a not good coz too fat feet-there is not much space for them
hell knows how to attach pics, can see google map and youtube
option but not a pic
i dont believe a diff must be out of the car to change pinion seal,it is easier with diff out,but not the way i wanna go
cheers

got to say second that why would you be wanting to do a pinion bearing and tube for no real reason.
if the bearing is stuffed then pull the diff and be done with it otherwise leave well alone
Re: ATTN Landcruiser owners!pls share yr exp.re PINION SEAL,BEAR
THE CRUSH SLEEVE CAN NOT BE REUSED,THATS WHY

Seems you've been given some wrong information..
Unstake and undo nut, pull flange, pry out old seal, knock in new seal, redo nut up to where it was before, restake
9 times out of 10 you will not have to worry about any preload
Redoing the crush sleeve requires a bit more technical know-how and is much easier done out of the vehicle

Andrews answer plus when tightening the pinion nut you may need to go a bit tighter untill you can just feel a slight tightness when rotating the pinion flange.or zero sideways movement.

I've done this before (prado 8" rear). I don't know if it's "all good", but it's still working.

Fitted about a dozen ARB lockers and always changed the seal, no problems.

ohhh come on guys, he wants to spend heaps of time and money to replace his pinion seal (10 min job as we all know) by doing it the long and hard way that is reccomended all over the net and in the workshop manual... dont try to talk him out of it...

dr4lex, because you have asked and said please share your experience
, I will
, but before I do let me explain
, there are two ways of doing things
, the way the workshop manual says and yes they have to get it right or face allsorts of legal action
, or do it the way that has been learned and used by people who have through past experience found a way that although not 100% correct as in the manual is sufficient to do the job
.Now I don't know how to post it here but I wrote an article explaining in full how to change a diff seal and although on a Surf it will be the same for a Landcruiser, go to --- In the garage>> Toyota ---- rear pinion seal replacement LN130 Feb;24 2010. Or someone may post it on this thread. If you do do it the BOOK WAY you had better be prepaired to do a bit more reading and spend a few more dollars, because to reset the pinion bearing pre load correctly requires a re-build , according to the manufactures Workshop Manual.
NOW SMILE PLEASE,

And everyone else is right too, you don't need to touch the crush tube unless you are planning to remove the diff head and reset the preload and backlash etc in the diff, which probably means you'll want new bearings and then you'll need to know how to set the diff back up properly. Not a job for the faint hearted or those that don't know what they are doing. I have replaced heaps of pinion seals and not one crush tube. I also don't know how to set up a diff head correctly. A pinion seal is simple.

Re: ATTN Landcruiser owners!pls share yr exp.re PINION SEAL,BEAR
Did one in a Hiace van 10 years ago, didn't touch the crush tube and got close to another 200000kms out of it before we sold it. The reason why it was leaking was the breather was blocked as we found out for later, we cleaned it out and it never leaked again.
I think you need to remove the diff head as you'll need to set the bearing preload without the crownwheel in place. I don't see how you can use a torque wrench to crush the crush tube and accurately set the pinion bearing preloads unless there's something I'm missing.

All of this I told him in person too
The flange seal surface has a cut grove from the old seal (not that unusual to me) but he had the correct speedi sleave with him too, so it should be a half hour job
Cheers,

I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!
Re: ATTN Landcruiser owners!pls share yr exp.re PINION SEAL,BEAR
Maybe there is something about this bearing that it needs to be changed for a new one?

Nup. Looked perfect to me and he said there were no issues with the bearings, he just wanted to replace the crush sleeve like the books say so.

Re: ATTN Landcruiser owners!pls share yr exp.re PINION SEAL,BEAR
You know? Everyone is right. i used to rebuild diffs for a living way back in another life before crush sleeves were invented. We used to spend hours on them using wet n dry to slowly peel off a few thou to get the pinion preload just exactly right, measuring it with a spring balance. Then we'd start setting up the R&P backlash with a dial gauge and a tube of marking blue for checking and adjusting pinion depth, side bearing preload and final tooth pattern. i mostly did Eaton truck diffs i must say, but quite a few valiant and other light Chrysler products as well.
The reasons were simple, minimum driveline lash for one thing, but primarily noise. there wasn't the insulation we have now and holdens were particularly bad at diff whine. Over tight truck diffs would glow in the dark as a worse case after a long trip so we had to get it right.
So how can we get away with reusing crush sleeves when all the experts say we can't? Mostly because most of you on here don't know any better which doesn't make you wrong. big mud tyres, noisy exhausts can hide diff whine and complaints, modern oils can hide a thousand sins and when you blow a diff, its because your wheels were too big and you gave it too much gas you think.
As well as that, i don't think anyone knows, or even needs to know how to set up a diff properly any more because generally if they're left alone they never fail.
lastly,my 80 series blew its rear diff seal at Christmas on the way to Pureora and oil was everywhere. That trip i used the Jeep so the cruiser just towed up and back. I clean forgot about it until WOF time and the thing had been running all that time virtually dry, but not a sound.
So I got one of the boys to change the seal. i got him to centre dot the end of the pinion and the corresponding part of the nut and count the turns as it came off. Then, after replacing the seal, i got him to wind the nut back on to exactly the same place and give it a gnat's cock more of a turn until I felt my own nuts tighten. the fill it up with oil and go get a WOF.
And it'll be fine. cheers, grandad.

While we are reminiscing,
I did my time doing stern legs on boats and we used the above methods too. I'm no stranger to backlash, preloads, tooth mesh and alikes.
Alex wanted to replace the crush sleeve because it said so and had no idea how much 1Nm of effort was (the value for preload).
He couldn't understand that to measure this or even estimate it the crown wheel needs to be removed.
He is trying to do a complete job in a half arsed way.
Cheers,
