thinking about 2wd sas to 4wd

Post by KIWI_TERRANO »

Shit weather so stuck inside and got bored and started doing some research.....

Been looking at hilux (02ish to 04ish) for an upgrade from surf as I need a ute, bit prices are stupid so had me thinking can I convert a 2wd to 4wd for the same price I can buy a 4wd lux but it will be even better. heres some links
http://www.4wdaction.com.au/forum/viewt ... 22&t=61237
and
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthre ... light=blue

Want some peoples thoughts on this
-Lj/kzj78 diff front coil set up with wide hub conversion
-surf rear diff
- running 33 tyres and make it look factory with some 4wd flares
- either turb the 5l with a manual pump and ct20 or put a 1kz and auto(I like autos) in.
-non electric transfer case out of same model 4wd 5l truck
-2wd rear springs with blocks long shackels (soft ride)

peoples thoughts?

Im still considering a hilux xtra cab onto the surf but I really need a double cab more than a single cab, the only stuff I cant do and will learn before I would take this on is weldin.

If i could weld the diff in myself and then got someone to set castor up I would save a lot of money.

Maybe you have too much money? Dairy farmer - tax expense....???

BY far the easiest and cheapest way would be to make your surf into a double cab....!
SWB V6 Paj with one or two mods ;)

This is my truck on a 130 surf chassis, the front diff is around 40mm forward and the rear about 15mm, this is using a single cab wellside off a swb single cab lux so nothing needed cutting off the front, i bobbed about 250mm off the back to get the good departure angle.

i like your thinking, iv pondered doing the same thing,
as you said you can pick up a 2wd much cheaer than a 4wd and you have to cut off everything any way to do sas, just finding a 4x4 trans and your away. look on pirate it gets done heaps

ans the late model 2wds dont have abs like 4wds that makes it easier to do.

another good point, just remeber if you go to to sell it you will have the dramas you have now of selling a modded vehicle.
i would convert your current lux, still save money in long run

the lift will be under 4inchs so it will be fine to sell though?

And I wouldnt sell it anyway, wil just turn into a farm hack once it gets to ruff.

I would double cab surf but that requires lenghting chassie and getting a cab and doing all the electrics changing every body mount and Im still left with coils on the back which is no good towing 2-3 tonne of fert back from town.
