2LT Engine trouble

Hey guys

Went to start my truck to go to work this morning and it wouldnt run. It was just running rough (sounded like 2 cyls) and so i went to give it a rev and it would rev upto 1500rpm then it would just drop down to 4-500rpm even with foot flat.

I tried pumping the primer pump about 40 times and its still doing the same thing.

It was running fine last night with no signs of any trouble.

 :? I need to get this sorted asap as its my only vehicle.

Cheers

Caleb

This motor only has 165kms on it, it was a replacement motor for my last motor that destroyed a head but the old motor still ran fine it was just a water addict  .
Oil and water still look fine and it doesnt overheat or blow white smoke.

Not sure will have to wait for flatmate to get home and see what we can figure out.

hopefully only a fuel delivery issue and not too serious..

have you taken the fuel line off and used the primer to check for a blockage?

Check for air getting into the fuel. I had similar symptoms with my 5L when I first put it in to my hilux.

Fingers crossed its something simple and cheap

I havnt touched anything to be honest, it was freezing cold and blowing a gale this morning and it was a very long day at work  I shall consider taking another look after a decent rum and coke

Yes and No, from memory the primer never went as hard as other ones. I can hear a squishing kinda sound from the fuel pump area like theres fuel moving through the lines.

Hmm I find it very strange how its all of a sudden just not gonna run, it went from faultless, smooth runner to not wanting to run at all :?

Any ideas on where to start diagnosing from?

Basically it starts everytime but either stalls instantly or it will run really rough, wont rev and will stall shortly after.

Need to try get it sorted tonight if possible (its not looking too good though )

Ok so after talking to Simon (sibainmud) he gave me a few ideas to try (thanks again dude  )

I managed to find the source of the problem but am yet to figure out how/why.

What happened was all the diesel had drained back to the fuel tank and the primer was not bringing it back up, so after getting a mouthful of diesel  it still wouldnt do anything so I dragged out my suction gun and after i took about 500mls of diesel out I managed to get it too run enough to prime the pump and get it running.

Took it for a drive round the block and left it running for bout 30mins so fingers crossed its solved... for now.

What I want to know is what do I need to change to stop this from happening again? Is it the fuel filter or the primer or what?

Im new to diesels (can you tell? )

did you try priming it with filter outlet hose off?
if you did and it still didn't suck fuel up the primer is stuffed. sometimes the primer itself will leak air in.
otherwise you either have a air leak at one of the fuel hose connections or the actual fuel pump itself.

one thing to check is the tank breather is clear. if its blocked the vacuum generated from several days of burning fuel can suck fuel back if theres a small air leak up at the IP end.
theres meant to be a one way valve in the primer but they don't always work.

Thanks dude im pretty sure it will be one (if not both) of those options. Didnt realise there was a tank breather and truck has been through a few sloppy puddles etc.

I think the primer may be stuffed too as it did give us a bit of a hassle when we put the motor in but has been fine since.

hey dude, sorry to hear you've had issues with the motor but definitely sounds like that primer, that's exactly what was happening on my dads surf,he found if he just parked down hill there was no worries  ,but yeah.after tracking down a good primer and putting that in never had a problem again

No complaints from me with the motor it runs like a dream 8) it definitely sounds like primer. So will start hunting one down when my pay check starts rolling in

Might have to come see you about making up an exhaust if you can? The guys at work seem reluctant on wanting to build me one lol

 ,i should have a primer in the back yard and yeah,i could look at doing an exhaust for ya,did you say you're looking for a dump pipe?ive just pulled a standard pipe of the latest motor so maybe i shouldn't throw that and then we'll have something to work off

if any one wants to do a run of dump pipes and exhaust i'll be in for one.

rather not have to import a dump pipe.

Yea could be a plan. I was trying to think of a way I could get a dump pipe made without taking the truck off the road, I wanna go full 3" from turbo back.

I also need a few other things off you (if you have them)

Idler arm (if you have a mint one)
Passengers side halfshaft

There was something else too no doubt ill remember too late again
