My new bottomless pit

Post by Finn68 »

Hey guys, been a member for a few weeks seeking advice on some 4WD problems I had. So thought I'd introduce myself and the truck.

95 KZN185 Surf 3.0TD Auto

Mods to date:

Snorkle
Old Man Emu suspension upgrade (50mm lift)
Mickey Thompson rubber
ARB Bull Bar (No Surf ones available so fitted a Prado one)
IPF Spots
EP9 Superwinch
Trans cooler
GME UHF
ARB Air Lockers (rear only... at this stage)

Here's some links to the pics

Yeah, that wasn't a great day though. My first outing with the mods and got all the way to the beach to find out 4WD wouldn't engage. Ever tried getting up the sand dune to Wilsons Rd in rear wheel drive only? The only mod that worked that day was the radio.

All good now though.

Nice looking truck dude  I got all the way to the beach via wilsons road in rwd, its good fun, didnt try coming back in rwd though, might be an idea for next time  actually come to think about it I did make it up the first dune from beach to wilsons in rwd playing around with a mate and his terrano.

I'm using a few climbs at Woodhill as a benchmark. Without air lockers I got about as far as this guy - I think its your mate...

So I heading there this weekend to give it another go. If I can't make it, perhaps I need front lockers too - damn it.

Yea thats Fraser (phraza) hes on here too. Ive never seen any truck get up that hill (and ive seen some serious trucks give it a go, only heard of one truck to make it up)

Woodhills good fun for a day out. I suggest joining a club so you can get shown the more fun tracks to try conquer

Norwest OHV is a great club (although I am biased  )

Diesel Dave has made it up there once. Problem is track conditions change depending on the weather. Sand is easy in the wet but a nightmare in the dry.
Gotta be one of the most featured places.

Welcome dude :D
Don't worry too much about the traction aids, learn to drive around to big holes.

I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!

How well did the superwinch mount on that bar? Im looking at doing the same thing this week. Whats it like for access to the clutch lever? Also how do you like the OME suspension in it, im very keen for some just haven't balls'd up enough to get a price yet. Cheers

Sorry, just saw your post.

The lads at MotorTech 4x4 did all my mods for me. Unfortunately ARB don't do a bar specifically for the Surf so we used a Prado one instead. Getting access to the clutch is quite tight but you can do it.

OME suspension is fantastic. Even though it's raised 50mm, it handles much better than the stock suspension on the road. I'm really pleased with how it handles offroad too.

If you're in Auck, my trucks at MotorTech now getting some more bits added so you can look at it there.

Not sure mate, you can ask the lads at Motortech 4x4. I think it was relatively straight forward but there is a small gap between the bar and the grill... but I'm not entering it into a fashion show so I don't mind.

Lots of places to play out on the beach, without tearing up the access track in 2wd :?

I think you've choosen the wrong recreational activity to be concerned about access tracks sport. What are you doing in you avatar pic, planting trees?

dont go flaming someone who has a wealth of knowledge and gives a lot to this forum.. you cant tell someone they are in the wrong sport when they politey tell you not to go ruining tracks in 2wd.... our chosen hobby already gets enough bad publicity without muppets on an open forum going "YEAH I DO THAT IN 2WD AND RIP IT UP!!!(or similar comments) it ruins our imgae and potentially can limit our access.

just play nice....

actually yes , I was planting trees at the time of that picture . As part of an effort to maintain access to a particular track.

you should be very concerned about our public bush access tracks! As they are few and far between and given the publicly viewed activities of a few in our vocation , we are very lucky to have any left at all.

fun can certainly be had discreetly and in the right places.

not trying to have a go at anyone , just bugs me that tracks get torn up in 2wd for no reason other than ego.

I don't think your going to be very popular around here with that attitude!!!!

Ever hear of tread lightly??

Tearing shit up in 2wd and wrecking the track is not good form

Relax lads, no need to get precious. If you read my original post, I was not tearing up Wilsons Rd. It was my first drive offroad in my new Hilux and as it turns out 4WD didn't work so I really didn't have a choice.

As an offroader, hunter, fisher and camper I respect this great land of ours and understand your point, but I don't think a 4wd in 2wd along Wilsons Rd is going to do any more damage to the track than sparrow with a limp.

yeah i'm a sensitive new age forum junkie, who spends all my time in front of my PC , pays other people to work on my truck , and only wheel in carparks.

yeah right ....................
my initial comment wasn't even directed at you. you might want to get to know some of us bit better before you blanketly classify us into small square boxes. but then thats why we are super selective about who we wheel with.

best of luck with the new truck , you should find it more than capable with the rear locker.

Thanks. I've just bitten the bullet and got front lockers as well which I'm told you need for those really challenging carparks  Apart from some rock sliders which I've ordered, I think that'll do me for a while. I know Surf's probably aren't the most capable offroader having a long wheelbase but I wanted to be able to sleep in the back while hunting etc.
