whats wrong with the old one ?
and what do you call cheap? as nothing in diesel is cheap

i would look at either rebuild it as a 2.8 or get a good second hand 2.8. i think the catch is if you old engine is series 1 or 2.

if you get a earlymodel surf one like 89ish some came out with 2.4turbo with a manual pump either that or just get a 2.4 turb and use your manual pump off your old motor.
I just brought a 89 surf 2lt motor (2.4 turbo manual pump) off trademe but the motor is dead

manual mechinic pump instead of the electronic controled one, mean you can tune more power out to!
give the boys a call at kaipoi repowers they should be able to sus something out to suit your budget

Il be converting a 5l to turbo one using the donor motor I used, been told they create more power than a 1kz, you could always do that

have you got the 4 speed or 5 speed gearbox?
any petrol conversion is going to cost a lot more than your budget.
depending a bit on gearbox, any of the L series motors will bolt up.
trouble is they are not cheap. last 2.8 i saw was $2k for one that had done 300,000 km's. i wouldn't bother with the 2.4's unless you get one just for the block and fit 2.8 crank and pistons.
