Engine Oil

Well, I've been searching around alot of forums to see if I can find some info on a good oil for my V8 3.9. The English rate anything that is full synthetic (mostly Mobil 1), the Yanks, well we don't sell what they rate but Mobil 1 is used alot and reported as a great oil.

I tried Mobil 1 and Castrol Edge full synthetics but for the price wasn't too impressed with the noise from start up to running, noisy lifter was really noticable. I planned on getting the noise sorted (the getting greasy type of fix), but read about a product that was quite "suited" for the Rover V8.

Now I always thought nothing great came from our neighbours from over the ditch except Elle Mcpherson  , but after reading one of their forums, I now know they have at least 2 things going for them  .

That product, Penrite HPR10, what a GREAT oil, no noisy lifters, much calmer idle, just sounds smooth to floor. I read that you can either use HPR10 or HPR15, Penrite state to use HPR15 on their website but I chose to give the 10 a go. So far I am very impressed with the oil, it's a semi-synthetic oil with a high Zinc content which is supposedly a good thing for the Rover V8. I will continue using this product for sure  8)

What oil are you using and is it working wonders for you, would be good to get a little feedback on different types and how they performed in your Landy.....

SuperCheap had Penrite $30 cheaper than Mobil, but it is a semi synthetic type compared to full syn. HPR10 was $59 book price and HPR15 was $53.

v8? you'd wanna do some research: I believe the landrover/rangerover v8s love oil with a high zinc (ZDDP) content. penrite is one such oil with this.
even castrol have dropped the ZDDP content of their 'oil for older cars' GTX dealio which is bad for older engines. even late 90s landrover ones. pretty much means goodbye cam and/or lifters.

Hi, I have run Rover V8's for years and I would certainly not recommend you spending your money on a fully synthetic, modern motor oil for this engine. The Rover V8 really does not like modern lightweight oils as they rely on a high flow of oil and thin oil cannot be pumped in volume in the same way as the heavier oil's. Go for a very minimum of 10W 40 but you are better of using a good quality 20W 50 and change it regularly. Make sure that the oil filter you are using has a non-return valve. If you feel that you must use a fully synthetic oil for competition use then have a look at Motul Oil V300 15W 50. Hope this helps, Ivor
