88 Surf Turbo Light

Post by muddy_munke »

Hi all,
I have an 88 Surf.
It's stock, only used for a weekend get around truck.
It's been given a hard time lately.
My dad has been driving it for the last 6 weeks everyday.
In the last few weeks the Turbo light has been coming on...
Now by this i don't mean the regular green light which normally comes on when it's on boost.
But the red one next to it....
Is this vacuum, or Turbo Farked?!!
It's the usual 2.4TD ticking time bomb!!

Any help or past experiences would be much appreciated!
Cheers,
Daniel.

welcome to red light hell. thats the "something is wrong" light.

if its one that has the diagnostic port you should be able to read the codes which will tell you whats faulty.

any problems in driving? low power?

Thats the over boost light. Mine comes on at about 12psi if I floor it. Never happend until I put a stack of washers behind the wastegate actuator so it could boost higher

Hmmmm interesting,
It hasn't been touched.
So it's started overboosting?
It's driving as normal and there is no lack of power.
It comes on anytime your are accelerating above 3000rpm.
Does this mean its getting worn out and overboosting? Does this mean I should push it off a cliff?
Is there an easy fix to such an issue or is it downhill from here?
Cheers,
Daniel

its nothing major.
pay to fit a boost gauge and see what its doing.
it could have split the wastegate actuator or hose.

the fuel pump has a safety feature, it leans out the fuel if boost goes to high.

mate had one of these and that light came on from the day he got it. had it for 4 long hard years and it never missed a beat so should be ok but would still put a gauge on it

Thanks for your help guys.
When I get a chance I'll throw a boost gauge at it.
Otherwise I'll find a cliff!

in my 2lt ive found the wastegates themselves get farked ive found 4 suposed good ones but blow in them and it comes staight out the other end, just take the wastegate hose off the intake pipe/compressor housing and blow in it youll soon hear if your wastegates poked the later model 2lts have a better acuater and turbo but a different flange (from what i have found there 2 different ct12's) not sure if you can swap the manifolds to run the newer turbo

just my thoughts hope it helps :D
i am a sh#t magnet so it might just be my luck with the actuaters
