Hi folks,
Am a complete newbie about to buy a new set of rubber, and am faced with the same conumdrum it seems as alot of others.
Just wanted to hear from anyone, who has Muds (looking at Mudstars or Buckshots type tyres) for a mitzi Challenger, and how they are to live with as a daily Driver,
50km return trip to and from work. And might get out with the family every now and again. Would be 95% at least on road to be honest.
It seems they are roughly the same price as an aggressive AT (Maybe AT117's) tyre so am undecided between the two.
Only looking at the above brands as they're in my price range.
Hopefully if I can make my first meeting at Papakura on Tuesday, I will have a chat in person, if anyone else is attending. Haven't joined yet, but will be.
Have a jigging mission on so hopefully might get back to Aucks in time for the meeting.
Daily Drivers and Mud tyres
Re: Daily Drivers and Mud tyres
i have mudstars on my suzuki, use it as a daily driver, and often do 400-500kms on a big 4wd trip. they are fine to drive on the road, slightly louder than a road tyre but not major. i hear guys get really good kms out of a set from new (assuming good balance, alignment, and rotation)
Re: Daily Drivers and Mud tyres
I have no problems Driving on the mudstars, however the have appaling braking in the wet, which would prolly influence my decision more than anything else.
To Boon or not to Boon.
Re: Daily Drivers and Mud tyres
I fitted a set of Maxxis Bighorns last time I was home. I was also a bit worried about road noise etc but noticed no difference at all from the AT's id had previously. Could be because of the V8 though

Re: Daily Drivers and Mud tyres
im another mudstar guy 32" on my surf, good tire with really good wear, but WHOLEY shit they suck a fat one when trying to slow down in the wet, even braking normally you'll lock a wheel, ive learnt to deal with it and keep a good distance in the rain liek your supposed too, but for the money you cant go wrong with a mudstar and i drive my truck offroad maybe once or twice a month

Maybe you got something wrong with the truck bro. I struggle to get mine to lose traction round corners (except roundabouts they just slide out at like 10kms), I havnt had any of my wheels lock up on me either, wet or dry

As for the mudstars they wear really well but they are pretty rubbish offroad to be honest. Cant wait to upgrade

Yeah, theyre the best cheap mud tyre, dont clear clay that well, handle ok in the wet except the braking as mentioned begore.
But you do get what you pay for. I think they were designed to be hard wearing for the road aimed at the more recreational offroader that drives on the street a lot more.

Re: Daily Drivers and Mud tyres
If you want a Mud tyre that will handle DD ,good in the wet, really good life on the tar and excellent off road ability . You can't go past BFG's.
expensive but You get what you pay for.

Cheers again,
popped into a tyre store today, was quoted $270 per corner fitted and balanced for either Maxxis 751 AT's, 754 Buckshots or the N889 Mudstars.
Thats for 31 10.5 r15's.
So if all for the same money, I'm guessing the buckshots would seem the go.
He did mention BFG's MT's and rubbished them from his own truck.
So I guess like anything, you get as many different opinions as people ya talk to.
P.S.
I also asked about the silverstone AT 117s as a chunky AT tyre (look like a desert dueler copy), in stead of a MT.
but was told they are a real budget brand, only the extreme tyres are good as they are a copy of Simmex.

Bit dear on the nankangs.got quoted $300 a tyre for 35in mt.
Think you'll find the simex is actually a copy of the silverstone but that another topic.....
Re: Daily Drivers and Mud tyres
mudstars have been going up in price recently from what I've seen. Buckshots look identical to mudstars and the 751s are good on the road/gravel/wet field but anything more and they are rubbish. My 751's are on a patrol as a tow wagon. For what they were, mudstars went wicked on my sj.
