Anyone in Auckland / North out there that is experienced with HEI dizzys, or do you know someone that is?

Since I've installed mine the truck will idle OK but dies / looses power when I rev it.

Its not a fuel problem - replaced all the fuel, new filter, and taken it to a carby specialist for a clean (and he has confirmed carby is working fine).

I've had the wiring checked by an auto sparky, truck is basically fully rewired, but he wasn't an HEI guru.

Timing has been done by two of my mechanic mates and the auto sparky. The timing light is all over the place but the best we can get it.

Spark plugs are brand new.

Used brand new 8.8mm HEI leads.

This issue is outside my limited mechanical knowledge and really is the only thing I need to sort before the truck is a runner - I need HELP.

bad voltage or tooth out. HEI needs a dedicated 12v ignition supply or can do all sorts of wierd shit, if the power supply to the dizzy is also feeding something else it will be drawin voltage away from the HEI and that is bad. also if the dizzy is a tooth out you will get bad readings... yea etc...

post a pic of the setup, assuming you got mechanical advance and not the 7 pin HEI, check the connections are clean and tight, and check you getting 12v solid

also if poss get a second hei as a test as we have had new units faulty straight off the floor

but it does sound like a power supply issue

Not north Auckland but Richard and Jason at Papakura Auto Electrical (Auckland 4x4) are very good.

Did you have the cap off at all? Because the cap can go on two ways and if its the wrong way it wont work properly either.
But it sounds more like power issues. Put a multimeter on the positive that feeds the dizzy start it up and keep an eye on the voltage when idling then rev it and see if the voltage drops it needs 12v all the time.

Yeah, had the cap off a few times - to set timing, check etc

Good suggestion on the multimeter - seams to be the most frequent suggestion so will try and find my one and give it a go.
