Snapped PTO steel cable, repairable?

Post by Slideways »

I have a factory PTO winch on my '85 Landcruiser with Steel cable.

I went 4wding last weekend and turned it into a block of mud inside and out.

After cleaning and swapping back to road tyres today I took it around the block and heard a big F'n snap noise.

Got out and found the cable snapped right by the hook ####!. This is weird because I hadn't touched it since the week before and I know it wasn't engaged. I checked the lever and found it won't go all the way into the óff' position, so I'm guess it got bumped while cleaning it out.

The question is, is there any way to get a new loop put in the end for the hook? If so, who does it in Wellington?

Cheers

Tires are like boobs, they always look big until you have played with them for a while, then you just want a bigger set.

Dont use staples on a winch cable, its asking for trouble. If you have to go to cookes to by them take the truck and get then to do it properly while you wait. You should be able to get close enough to the crimper to leave the cable on the truck

What are you using as a shear pin, always had the pin go before the cable unless you had damage to it already. will pay to pull it all out and look for any damage. cookes will often do this before they put a new eye on it. they did when I got one put on my cable.
good luck

ok i might of called them the wrong name but there is nothing wrong with grips as stron as the cable and easily installed

heres a site that i found to show a picture

http://www.ropecentre.co.nz/general-har ... grips.html

been using them and cable tac'a'mans for years with no problems at all

as a side to this, winching over slack rope on the drum is what damages most rope but in our game its completely unadvoidable.

tac'a'mans are brillant for adjusting the lenght of wire ropes to excactly the right lenght as well as a cheep and easy way of doing a quick conection if a rope breaks.

Is that what they call those cam lock style clamps, with the removable pin? I have two of those to enable me to use the Hi-lift as a winch (using my extension cables). Great for enabling you to pull from 1st layer on winch when need be
If you break it... build it stronger.

Cheers for the info everyone, I'll be taking it to Cookes to look at condition of cable and hopefully putting a new eye in along with a better hook.

mudmike: I use a 3mm high tensile cap screw. It may have broken the cable first because it was at an almost 90deg angle with the winch hook attached to one of the rated hooks (i.e. I wasn't actually winching at the time).

A mate uses the same cap screw and has had them snap before the wire.
