4wd problems
4wd is trying to engage on it own when in 2wd. this happends at about 40-65 kph and you can hear a grinding noise.today i just poped it into 4wd and it fixed the problem, but most of the time i just slow down there is a clunk and it stops. It only started a few weeks ago but is getting worse, 4wd engages real smooth when needed. this is a 1991 navara any ideas.

Your hubs are half locking while driving. My Safari used to do it mainly when it was really cold for some reason. Its could be the grease is not working properly from the cold. Simple fix... put manual hubs on and it will go away lol. It happened to me in Taupo and I pulled it off and put some engine oil in the hubs (all I had on me) and it fixed the problem until I got back to whangarei 4days later then I put manual hubs on.

It has only started in the last few weeks and in the morning or late evenings so that could be the problem.

are they auto or manual hibs?
my guess is they are auto and are f#$ked so will have to be replaced, my terrano did it and i replaced with some avm manual hubs and fixed it.

I have a spare set of Terrano auto hubs going very cheap if you need them

My auto hubs are starting to play up, i take it out of 4wd but the front wheels still drive, luckily got some manual ones sorted

I have some auto hubs here from when I swapped mine for Manuals that you can have for free! I do not remember if they are 27 or 28 spline though.

Cold mornings = the oil in the transfer case is thicker so will create drag on the t/case chain
and spin the driveshaft, hubs etc. Mine used to do it on really frosty mornings but not when the day warmed up.

I changed the oil in the front diff and transfer case, pulled the front hubs off and there was plenty of sticky stuff in there so will see how it goes for now.

That could be it- mine used to do it but only on really cold mornings. I've done the manual hub swap now anyways

Yep, mine still does it...I run proper gear oil in the transfer case during summer and atf fluid in winter and have no probs whatsoever.
It's actually a Nissan directive in the Y61 models that those with auto/manual hubs run auto trans fluid in the transfer case.
