Hi all - I`m in a quandry and need some advice...
I`m after a cheap <$4kish vehicle to be an occasional daily driver (say 6,000kms p.a.), haul kids + bikes + associated bits and pieces around on occasion, with the ability to tow v.heavy trailers out of muddy paddocks and forests. Hence I need a 4wd (again) - but what one?
I`ve made up a fairly comprehensive cost of ownsership calculator, so any real life l/100km would be appreciated - I`m open to buying another petrol 4wd, due to the lower cost of purchase, combined with my low annual mileage...
I`ve had several series land rovers (one with a 3B diesel, one with a 186 holden, and a few standard 2.25l), a diesel terrano, two bighorns (one petrol, one diesel), a diesel discovey and a 2 door rangie on LPG.
I`ve driven the various toyotas (Surfs and LC) for work and they just don`t do it for me - and I don`t much like Safari`s (bit too tank-like for me).
So.. ideas? When i say heavy trailer im talking tandem cage trailer (i.e. big Briford) loaded with <say> wet blue gum... The rangie and the disco (and the 3.1 isuzu) were pretty good tow vehicles, but i`m open minded... but a 110 V8 would do nicely...
Recomendation on what 4wd?
Re: Recomendation on what 4wd?
Id go the v8 110. One of the only 4wds to have a 3500kg tow rating and I doubt you'll break the 110 running gear. Since it doesnt sound like you'll be using it much it sounds pretty well suited

Re: Recomendation on what 4wd?
Not that I have owned one, or know anything thing about them. But for only 6000kms / year, and you've had similar before.
4.6 Rangie, and cut the mufflers off!! I reckon you want to too!

To help with your figures in our 92 Bighorn 3.1TD auto we get 12L per 100km loaded (This includes a large roof basket) on 30" Tires and 15.6L per 100km Loaded on the 33" Tires
I use it for regularly draging out firewood from the back of a friends farm about 2m3 at a time

Maybe a Mitsubishi Pajero the LWB 3000cc will easily fit your budget the 3500cc will get close and for a little more the 2.8 diesel will fit and before all the knockers jump in,
TRY ONE,
FITZY.
