Rattling noise from hub area

Post by jagni401 »

Gidday,
I know this is vague, but the passengers side hub makes a rattling/clunking sort of noise when I go over corrugations on a gravel road. I have just done the steering knuckle and swivel housing seals etc. It sounds kind of like the cv is jumping around or the shaft itself is moving around inside there. There was no 12mm nut and washer on the end of the cv, like the surfs have... should it have one?

I can move the shaft in and out about 3mm, is this too much play?
I have got the circlip on the end of the cv as well.
Possibly loose wheel bearings, but I don't think so

I remember I had to replace the rotor hub in my surf a few years ago, because the bronze bush (or whatever it was) let the driveshaft rattle inside the housing
Any ideas??

cheers

Nick

This is the same as mine, with no washer and nut on the end of the cv...
Is that correct?

This is the bush thing I was talking about, perhaps it is worn, which lets the cv shaft rattle around??

If it sounds different to before your swivel hub rebuild, something has gone amiss.
You need to review what you have done and check tighten all your bolts.

I wouldn't be driving it until I could confirm whats rattling.

i would be looking at spring and shock bushes as well as the u bolts holding the axle to the spring assumimg you are dealing with a live axle lux

if the sound is coming from the hub itself is it happening whilst in 4x4 or when the transbox is in 2 and the hubs are out

as for replacing the brass sleeve that would be the last option as they should be good for well over 100k as look at the 80 Lc its still running the sleeve and they dont start becoming a problem untill over 200k and they are full time 4x4

you have the spring clip in so no need for any nut and washer the reason for the thread is to insert a bolt to pull the cv out to install the clip if things are being a bit tight

as mentioned above i would be checking things out before something lets go and things go horribly wrong

as has been said above I'd be having a good look at the suspension and steering componants, shocks, springs, steering dampner, brackets, mounts, swaybar, splash shields and anything bolted on etc, I've driven around with smashed CV's and never heard any noise from them

Beaut, cheers guys, I'll have a wizz over all the bolts etc tomorrow and see what I can find

Yep its a leaf sprung live axle.

I've only owned the old girl for a few weeks so not fully used to it all yet.
Around town with the hubs engaged and also un-engaged in 2H, it does not make any noises. I only took it for a spin off road today and noticed the rattle over the small corrugations in the road.

body panels hitting a bullbar or something silly like that. I had a mechanic chasing a noise in a work Hilux. was the washer on the fender flare hitting the bull bar. only happened cornering on bumpy roads... Drove me mad for a month....

Jack it up and start hitting things to try replicate the noise...
Dont follow me. i'll get stuck and need a tow..

Haha bang on the money Callum

The skirt bumper was loose on the passenger side, and vibrating/rattling
I must have bent it up smashing through snow drifts

Cheers for your help, it has saved me a headache
