been in there a few times after cyclone bola but we always flew in and based around huts, theres fark all tracks within the range but we always found travel pretty easy so long as you stay out of the gorges, spent a bit of time up the Oranui (sp) on the Ruatoria side and up the Mangatutara up the Motu on the Opotiki side

Well there's jet boat access up the Motu to Helicopter Rapid, Also up the Raukokore to the Waikura Forks, probably get a jetboat a fair way up several of the other rivers in winter too.
On the other side there is the Otipi Track which goes in from Takaputahi Rd off the Motu road down to the Motu river.
Not sure if any of that ties in with what you need.
Cheers

otipi road has a slip 5 km from the end of it. At the moment you can drive up past te kumeu station on the raukokere as the river is so low, maybe access through mangatu forest if you talk to the right people?

There was someone doing tours up the Motu at one point, dunno if they still are. The Northern Districts jetboat club has a fairly strong presence in the eastern BOP, in a SAR situation I'd say you'd have no trouble getting some of them on the job.
