Battery equalizers?

Post by DaveM »

The Safari I have just bought is running a 12v winch off the 12v battery. Would an equalizer be sufficient to ensure I don't have problems with it being a 24v vehicle? Would save having to buy a new winch, but not sure if equalizers are designed to cope with this type of thing.

Cheers

as far as i know they wont handle the draw. Full load amp draw on the winch will be in th 400amp mark. Also as is set up now will fry the batterys pretty quick.
good 24v winches are pretty cheap. Would prob work out cheaper than couple batterys/equaliser. Also alternator prob wouldn't handle that kinda draw either.
Interestly the 24v winches only draw half what a 12v one will. Less loading on alt as well

Just got a reply from Red Arc who make equalisers. Seem to think that their units will be good enough for keeping the batteries equalised without running into problems. Will do a bit more homework before I buy one though I think.

be wanting a warrenty with that. Would be interested in how it goes with 400amps charging through it.
Just remember the alt is 24v and is only rated at 35amps. Pretty easy to boil batterys/fry alternator trying to keep up with the current draw.

hey there this is only my experiance so its not realy worth a lot to some but i will fire away anyway

my BJ74 now has a sbc sitting where the 13bt was

i kept the 24v alt so i didnt have to cjange all the light wipers etc and ran the hei dissy and starter off the 12v bat'

i installed a equaliser unit to keep everything happy as you do

over a period of 18 to 12 month i chewed thru 2 set of 660cca batteries and when i wasnt putting in new batts' i was having to swap them over every 6 to 8 weeks as the 12v batt' would just runn out of puff

as im a slow learner and not wanting to do the 12v change over i perserveered untill 1 weekend when out camping the truck would not start in the morning with a bit of assistance ( manuel type not telepathic like on other pages here) we got the truck going

anyways cutting back to the story on hand here

i thru the 24 alt out and installed a new 85amp 12v alt and havent looked back good strong and most important reliable

i know that you cant convert your truck so i would say to convert the winch to 24v either just change the motor and solanoid packs or sell the 12v winch and use proceeds towards the new 24v unit

you said you would rather not buy a new winch but as when you will be using the winch in anger is exactly the time when reliability is the most important and wasting the 12v battery and hoping a equaliser will do its job i think is a big ask

just my thoughts

Fair call. Would rather have something I can rely on, than take the cheap and easy option and have problems in the long run.

Guess I should check they haven't hooked up a 24v winch to the 12v battery before I get too far. Anyone know how I can tell? It's a 9000lb Superwinch, can see the HP rating, but no reference to voltage. Nothing on motor that I can see either.

Cheers
