Re: 3b in a hilux?
Did some front bar mods on a 89 d/cab a few years ago which had a 13b in it. Never got to drive it but the owner rekoned it went well. Tight in the bay but he hadn't done any firewall mods.
Personally I think it would be a very good transplant

Re: 3b in a hilux?
the weight of the old diesel would put me off the idea. but intended purpose comes in to that tho. would make a good tow wagon

Re: 3b in a hilux?
reckon it'd be a good idea.
Pro's: Reliabe as anything, heaps of grunt down low,and if turbo'd go really well.
Cons: Bit heavy,24volt so be a rewire.
Would be great tow wagon(if turbo'd) and awsome at crwaling round rocks/tech tracks.

Re: 3b in a hilux?
have got a 60 with one in it so can have a measure up if needed.
If poss i'd look at putting crusier box (Auto or man)and transfer in then you can run a pto as well.

Not all 3b's are 24volt only the 60 and 70series ones, so just get a 12volt 3b

Toyota Landcruiser FJ40, front and rear lockers, 35" simex.
Toyota FJ45 build in progress.
Tires are like boobs, they always look big until you have played with them for a while, then you just want a bigger set.

Re: 3b in a hilux?
I had a 3b in a hilux wouldnt get anymore than 100kph out of it even with a 5spd as it would be reeving high i guess higher ratio diffs would compensate for it tho. Had a latish model hilux (i think it was g52) gearbox behind it and the tourque of the 3b was far too much for the gearbox to handle. A 1kz would be a far better option apart from the price to buy one.

Fixed it for you

As for lack of go just chuck a turbo on it. We found made a massive difference to on road but can still chug around at idle

Re: 3b in a hilux?
cheers for all the info guys, helps make an informed decision, i'm after a chugger that has plenty of torque as it's to be used daily as transport to work, will be a bit of a retro rockcrawler, and want it to tow my other beast.
Plan is (build thread to come) will be a single cab f/d, exo'd falcons rear, RUF, hi steer, dual cases, diesel, 33's or 35's (wrangler style or a/t)
have the vehicle and most of the required parts already just a power plant left to fig out, thinking the 1kz with a manual pump could well be the go but that's going to reqire another adapter to run th duals(which are avail $$)
cheers
Tim

Re: 3b in a hilux?
I have always wondered about going to the larger 14BT (3.6l) engine. About 10% more power and torque on the 13BT. Found in Dyna's there must be a few floating around.
Not sure how you would go about fitting it... Just putting it out there as food for thought

Re: 3b in a hilux?
I like the sound of this, if my 2.8d gives up the goes.
Id also look into putting the 13bt in with the gearbox so i could run the PTO.
Bloody hurry up and start the build thread!
