But yea a big difference, wind up fuel to match afterwards, and then the biggest difference will come from doing the exhaust. 2.5" from turbo back. a safe level will be round 18psi I would say at a guess

You dont know how to turn the boost up, but your giving a guess at a 'safe' level to run?

Hmmmm

I wound up the boost and fuel in my 2.4 and it made a huge difference, went from being a slug to gaining speed up hills in 5th.

I wouldnt run anything over 14-16psi without getting an intercooler put on it, Wouldnt go any higher than 10-12psi on a standard exhaust either.

Just have a play around with it (if you know what you doing) might pay to invest in a EGT and boost gauge so you can see whats going on.

As long as its a healthy, solid motor it should be fine just dont push it too far unless you got a spare motor lying around

Cheers

Sorry for the uninformed, useless comment. Will try not to do that again.

Once again sorry for all the hassle

there is no fixed "safe" level. You can cook an engine with 8 psi just as well as you can with 18 psi. Search some topics on here and you will find you should be adjusting your fuel, boost and exhaust all at the same time and tuning with an EGT gauge.
Do it once and do it right, they are expensive when they blow up..

i'm not saying spend a fortune but 200-300 spent now doing it right is only 10 percent of what it'll cost you if it goes wrong.

We could all tell you "she'll be right mate, just wind it up to 20" but who's paying the bill if it goes wrong?

Good luck .

I shouldn't add my 5c here but, run heaps!!
I was told more than 7psi on my 5L-t and it would die, so I initially ran 12, then just to prove everyone wrong I give it the occasional dose@ above 35psi, I have no Idea exactly how much cause it pins the gauge at abut 3500 rpm..

running heaps of boost wont hurt your engine although it may damage the turbo by over spooling it.
Personally i would keep it under 17psi and i would add an intercooler- once youv'e done the exhaust.

will, don't forget your running an IC. that makes a big difference at those higher boost levels.
you really need an IC for 15psi and above. thats why a lot keep the boost down to 10-12psi. engine survival is more about fueling than just boost, but excessive inlet temps can cause issues with peak flame temps.
with 2.4, how hard you push it depends a lot on if its original head, running stock cam and how worn the old thing is. the 2.8 head and 2.8 cam is a lot better.

incidentally Will, did you get to play with the pre cups? as that starts getting important at higher fueling.

Hey tweake, ^^ just in case you didn't see that..
As for modifying the pre-combustion chambers.. nah I haven't had the engine apart. Im not sure if im going to chase more power but Im seriously considering it.

hay guy it has a 2.5 inch exhaust by previous owner and can sort out a boost gauge so how do i wind it up and how do i wind the fuel up

You can get a cheap manual boost controller (bleed valve type) for like $25 on TM put that on then adjust to suit. The fuel isnt too tricky either, I have a manual diesel pump on mine so im not sure if the electric ones are the same or not but anyway:

On the back of the fuel pump (passengers side, front of engine in case you dont know) there is a screw with a nut on it, it will most likely have a little plastic cap over it. Pop off the cap, loosen the nut and turn the screw (1/8th of a turn at a time) until desired amount of fuelling has been reached, tighten nut and enjoy

Im pretty sure the screw turns anti-clockwise to raise fuelling but cant remember off the top of my head, im sure someone will have the right details.

clockwise for more fuel. .

that is if your looking at the back of the pump

after putting on a 2 1/2'' exhaust and snorkel my boost raised from 6.5 pound to 9.5 it goes heaps better and feel its a safe level
