Cracked 2.8 head

Post by NJV6 »

I have got a 2.8 turbo 1998 Pajero with 250km on the clock which the previous owner ran out of water and cooked it. One way or another it is going to be fixed.

The head has a number of cracks so is shot.

Do I
a) put a new head ($1000) on it and carry on
b) but a new (2nd hand with warranty) motor in for $3000
c) new head and rings and bearings and hone in current motor for $2800

a) is the most appealing but the chap reckoned it was a bit slow turning over after it got hot. The bores look fine with no scoring from the rings if they did expand a bit hence me coming up with options b) and c).

I don't want to put it back together to find I should have done rings.

What ya reckon?

I think option c) new head and rings and bearings and hone in current motor for $2800

Better than a used one as you know what you have got.
Better then just a head job as you know the rest is good.

Just measure stuff :D :D

Thats what I did when I had mine out a week or so ago.

Measure the bores, measure the ring gaps, it will tell you where everythings at. Any half decent work shop manual with that motor in it will have the spec's. Someone will have the measuring tools around town you can borrow I'm sure.

If the bores check out, you could just give it a bottle brush hone and new rings. Bottle brush hone tool can be bought from Repco and ya just stick it in your drill.

Keep it cheap with in reason I say
