Big Black

Post by NJV6 »

My latest project, A NZ new wagon with a manual trans, being NZ new it has factory diff lock and manual fuel pump. Its a 1998 NL model.

Got it, it was filthy inside, so much dust and it has been run out of water. SO hot the top tank on the radiator was melted. Some pics.

Started yesterday morning, I pulled the engine out...

Image

The 2.8's and 3.5's have a pull clutch which is a sod of a thing to get out, there is a pin with a bolt in it inside the bellhousing. I have two special tools for the job, I made one up when I took the clutch out of the 3.5 a few years ago. this time the pin wouldn't slide out so needed tool number two.

To get the top bellhousing bolts I gave big black a body lift

4 lumps of 4x2 did the job

Stripped interior (found some money!!!)
Image

Vacuumed it

Pulled windows out and waterblasted them

Image

Waterblasted all the pastics inside the vehicle also then started on the carpets.

Got most of the dust and dog hair out I think, I sure hope so anyway. Started reassebling, as much as I can until carpets dry.

Pulled turbo off manifold ready to drill for a exhaust temp gauge.
Image

Cleaned the inlet manifold and rocker cover to within an inch of its life, this thing was rather full of gunk.

Thats it for now.

Ha ha Keri, na the 2.8's are the good ones, much more solid than the 2.5 motors. If it had not been run out of water then it would have been fine, until it choked itself from its own soot with the EGR!

What will i do with it.... Hmmm, who knows but it was well priced..... I will be wanting a vehicle like this for the farm but not for a couple of years... It'll end up for sale for a good profit and if it doesn't sell it won't owe me much. If it sells, more money for The Pav! Picked up a complete PTO (whole running vehicle for a 24 pack) so things looking up.

No no, you are the master of big jobs! This is just little compared to yours. I am going to repair the motor yes, but am going to take the easy option and drop it off to an engine shop....

as a price guide, I just sold one same specs as yours, 98 NZ new, diff lock, manual and 228km's - average tyres for 6.8k. Was pretty good nick to be honest with new injector pump.
Brought it from a dealer trade so was able to make some money. And ended up geting my now 3.0 V6 challenger auto.
Yes I know - what was I thinking?

Was the cheapest equal on trademe for the same condition / kms. Probably could of got a bit more if I was to hold out for longer.

As for the V6, I have a light right foot, so it's not too bad, a bit more than our falcon. On a trip to turoa managed 10.6L/100 believe it or not. But going to work is 12 - 12ish L/100km.
Just prefer the petrol TBH, which is why I traded down to the lighter challenger, as it's mainly just to get to work, and a bit of business.
I have no idea when it comes to diesels!

Good luck with the engine rebuild Glen, these engines have ceramic cylinders in them and can not be re bored, if this motor has got that hot as to melt the radiator you will need to at least replace the head and pistons at a bare minimum and this is a very costly exercise as I have been down this road with customers vehicles. Also check the condition of the timing chain as we have had a few fail also.

Thanks Nick, timing chain was going to be done... I have a bit of an update...

SO I pulled the sump.... All good still, no filings at all, actually it was nice and clean, but the oil level sensor plastic bit had gone brittle and was sitting in the sump

Image

Finally found the injector pump timing mark...

Image

Lots of gears in there.
Image
Image

Then got it out for a measure up and the sun light revealed...
Image
Image

Some marks in the bores and signs of it having almost seized due to heat. SO... I now have another dilemma, where to from here. The bores are no longer fully round. Depending on price for pistons I may re bore or get another motor, proving to be easier said than done to get another motor. Despite what I have seen on some sites most Delica 4M40's are quite different in the oil pump area and are not interchangeable.

As a side note Nick, the Engine re conditioners said they could rebore it if it stacked up price wise and said if it was their motor thats what they'd do. I'll wait and see the price response.

I still have a backup option of another motor for $3k + freight ($250 to invers!!) and it'll still remain within budget.

If your flicking it on, why not just do a bottle brush hone, new rings, new head, stick it back together then pass it along to the next owner :D :D :D :D
