Advise needed for suspension lift Please!

Post by mbw »

Hi

I have a BJ74 landcruiser and looking at raising it a couple inches. The shocks are due for renewal, but springs still seem to be ok.
So was either looking at getting a complete lift kit, with new lifted springs or would extended shackles be ok?

The other question is what brand to go for OME, EFS, Tough Dog, Ironman or what ever else?

if your existing springs seem ok then dont expect too much out of sticking aftermarket lift springs in it coz they will only end up being around the factory height or a little over when the vehicle was new, if you want to see what sagged out springs look like have a look through fakeys 70 series build thread and I'm pretty sure theres some pictures of his sagged out truck he started with. I've only ever tried Factory, OME and Lovell springs on my cruisers, I think my 40 series OME front springs are shit but my 70 series ones I've always liked, my 70 series front ones are about 8 years old now (first of the dakkar series) and arent showing any signs of sagging yet and they have always articulated pretty well for a leaf spring unlike the ones on my 40 series. You can go a wee bit longer on the shackels but dont go stupid and stick great big long ones on coz you'll only end up affecting your driveshaft/pinion angles, steering geometery and your approach angle at the front of the vehicle, greasable anti-invesion shackles are the ones to look for

the pics of my 70 series are with 35" simexes and 35" creepies, 50mm body lift with OME springs, the trucks a couple of hundred kilos lighter in the front with a small block chev instead of the 3F petrol engine but its also got 100kg+ of ARB bar and highmount winch hanging on the front

OME 2" for sure.. it's IMO the best you can place under 70's + the ride will be the closest to coils..

Thanks Guys

I've emailed a couple places to get a price for a OME kit, so hopefully it's not stupidly expensive.

yep similar prices to the 60

if you are any good with a welder dont buy the antiinversion kit as a 50x 8 or 50 by 10 will do just as good a job i can take photos of my set up as this is tried and tested

has done 6+ yrs of hard stuff and only just the last trip did a hugh log show any signs of putting stress onto the fixed eye end of the spring

Does anybody know who else stocks OME gear? apart from the two official stockists on the ARB website.

Thanks everyone for the tips!

I've just finished installing the OME kit and it is great. So much smoother that before.

Didn't realize how stuffed my old shocks were until I took them off.

I'm a bit disappointed by how much of a rip off some of the kit is. I ended up using terrain tamer and EFS shackles as the OME "anti inversion kit" consists of two pieces of steel you have to weld onto the chassis where the eye attaches. (Very Mickey mouse)

Went to spring makers and got new U bolts made up at almost half the price of OME.

Next I'm off to order some new rims and tyres.

Also one thing to remember and is very important is grease ya leaves often ( there are holes along the leave pack) and if you got greasable shackle pins do them same time.. it makes it even better..

Are you supposed to grease standard leaves as well? Do you just jack them up and get them to separate and squirt grease in there? Is any wheel bearing grease ok?

How often would you recommend? Once a month, once every two months?
