60 series rear diff 4.1 ratio
60 series rear diff 4.1 ratio
Hey all After another diff for my truck, My one at the mo seems to have a very loud whine is and getting pretty anoying!.
Real bummer because it is the cable locking one.
But for now any replacement diff will do.
Thought about swapping the front to the back but thats a big job and not up to it at the moment.
Fully float axle so should be easy to swap over.
Cheers
Aaron.

It's a factory cable locker, yes? Spend a little more extra an get new bearings put in the diff head

Didn't barbie drive a jeep??
Re: 60 series rear diff 4.1 ratio
some of the housings are different if they have a factory fitted locker and a standard diff wont fit.I know the e lockers are like this but not sure about the cable operated ones.

:O A mate reckons a waste of time redoing all the bearings etc as the teeth etc could be worn out, But to be honest that was my initial plan.
Basicly i can drive along coast slighty and nearly have no noise, accelerate and it comes back. Chuck the clutch in and it reduces the sounds heaps but can still slightly hear it.
Overall would rather rebuild it etc.

Wait so if you put the clutch in the noise pretty much goes away? I'd be looking at the input bearings in the gearbox, the 60 series box in my truck made loads of noise with worn input bearings
Give your mate a slap next time ya see him

Give your mate a slap next time ya see himeven off the gears were worn it's easy enough to get good 2nd hand or new ones fitted when it's apart getting bearings done
Will do :p.
Ill have to take her for a run and double check. But yeah clutch in or in neutral it seemed to disppear quite alot, But i can still hear a noise in the diff but nothing really bad i think :S. Will take her for a run 2mrw and report back

Gearbox related stuff sounds $$

Cheers man really appreciate this Saves me doing work that i dont need to do.

I just put all new bearings a seals in a customers 60 series 5 speed for less than $500
Toyota Landcruiser FJ40, front and rear lockers, 35" simex.
Toyota FJ45 build in progress.
Tires are like boobs, they always look big until you have played with them for a while, then you just want a bigger set.

Yea the labour cost of removing, repairing and replacing Is more than the $500 for parts.

Can be hard determining where the noise is coming from when you are driving.
One option could be to remove the rear drive shaft and axles and take it for a drive in 4wd (actually front wheel drive)
If its still noisy then its not the rear diff...
Just a thought if you wanted to rule some things out before paying labour to have it fixed.

Re: 60 series rear diff 4.1 ratio
my cable locker has lost the side gear spline
lost drive just made horrible noise for a bit of triva the open diffs side gears are the same as the cable lockers but the berings are different
also mine had same noise and crown wheel and pinion need replacing
so need set of 4.1 in chch

wish i had read this before i went and tried to fit one

the normal crown and pinion are way different as well the locking pinion one is much larger so that doesnt work either
