exhaust questions

Hi was just wondering about putting a big bore or something on my 1988 terrano 3.0L ... had a look at the axhaust on it and one of the mufflers has a hose going back in to the engine what is that? can that muffler be removed and put a coby in there? if not what else could i do to make it louder?

Its probably an air supply pipe to the Cat converter.
Its supposed to help with the oxidising of the emmisions so that carbon monoxide becomes carbon dioxide etc.
Just an emission thing, you can remove it if you want but unless its blocked it probably wont make much difference.
Might sound better though.

it looks like it goes to something that looks like a small brake booster?
just worried that it would #### something up if i removed it but if thats all it is i'll rip it off
