Does anyone know whos land this track actually is on? doc or maori land?
last time i went up there, a new gate had been put up with padlock and chain.
was really dissapointed. has anyone been up lately an cld tell me if gate still closed?

That sight wont work for some reason, does it say what land its on? i want to know who put the gate up.

last i heard it was doc land but not 100% sure.

this was a good track and will suck if its no longer available to use

There is some disputed land in that area, but if you Talk to the guys at Kaitaia 4x4 club, they are very much in touch with what is happening and can arrange access.

really need to find some different tracks then having to head up to kaitaia or down to woodhill haha

I'd say its probably Maori land.
I have a share in 2000 acres up those ways myself.
A little bit further south then the crunchie tho.

Kaitaia club will be able to help you. If they ever get back to you.
Maybe go and ask at Kaitaia Motorcycles, they may know, very onto it people.

My uncle is a council member up there (just remembered) haha and he refered me to this guy at the council who said...

The Erehwon Track is off Gumfields Rd approx 4kms past the Shipwreck Bay turnoff, look for corrugated iron buildings close to the road on the left.

You may have to pay a Koha no more than $5 though, the track was fairly rough last time I had been through with possible panel damage & scratches from gorse/teatree.

Lower tyre pressure once you reach the sand, 18 psi is fine however you should carry a compressor to pump up the tyres once you reach the blacktop.

Once on the beach at Tunatuna you can turn left or right, left will take you back to Ahipara via Tauroa Pt/seaweed pickers huts but make sure the tide is on the outer.

Turning right will take you south towards the Herekino Harbour entrance, just follow the track(s) south around several headlands, watch out for on coming vehicle as it's narrow in places.

Once onto Waikare Beach just north of the harbour entrance look for vehicle tracks heading up into the hills/forestry, the track is between the harbour and the first creek north of the harbour entrance. The sand track continues up into the forestry, again look out for on coming vehicles. This track leads onto Rangikohu Rd opp Herekino School. turn left to get you back to Kaitaia.

Another alternative would be to start at the Herekino end & travel north however you cannot get up onto the Erewhon Track so on around Tauroa Pt is probably your only option.

For further info email the kaitaia4x4club@hotmail.com there are several other tracks in the area you may wish to try. Some of the Club members may be heading out that way over the Christmas/New Year break also.

This was from last year before we went up there.

we used to use that track heaps before knowing about the crunchie untill the last time we tried to go though the locals living next to it woulnd let us, wouldnt except payment either so we went through the crunchie trail wich had no gate at that time.
Now theres a gate so sorta buggerd haha
google earth shows the Erehwon track as a named road?? Maungaperekere Pa Rd

id be keen to head up the beach from shippies right around the headlands to that forestry track by herekino one day if anyones keen let me kno

ok that wams site is working, and it looks like the 1st 1/4 of the crunchie trail is on moari land but the last 3/4 Doc, and the erewhon track it shows as a formed road so really they have no right to stop people using it.

some local maori think they own the land but local word when we were up there at new years was to just drive on through and not engage the locals , they have been told by the local council not to impede traffic. Funny as this is the track that traditionally has required Koha.

The Crunchie passes over Maori land, but as far as I was aware there was an understanding to allow people through.

The Kaitiaia Club guys are awesome to deal with and defiantly recommend touching base with them if you are heading up that way . A lot of local politics in the area and they have fort hard to retain what little 4x4 access they still have.

Just to note the access off the beach at the south end through the Herekino Forest is restricted and requires a permit from the local forestry company. other wise you are trespassing.

Meh, go South via Herekino and Punguru and hit Mitimiti, the locals there are sweet. Cuzzies even have a little camp ground on their land (and yup its their land) with a loo, fresh running water and heaps of shelter, and would like $5.00 a night per person.

Does anyone know who owns or wich company manerges the forestry by herekino?

Hi, I know this is an old thread but am curious as to how you blokes got on with getting the access thing sorted.

I have bought a place up north and am keen for some 4 wheel action in the area.

Will let you know after x.mas. I believe it's the usual story of who you know and a Koha.

Kaitia club will have all the current up to date info, access is quite a fluid thing up there

Thanks, I am only up there till end 1st week Jan so will endeavour to make contact with the 4 x4 guys. I ran into one of them in a shop in Kaitaia so will see if he still works there when I get back in a couple of weeks

A bunch of kaitaia 4wd club boys went through the crunchie on labour weekend so access is possible.

There is a sign with a number on the gate now.

I went down the next track up gumfeilds road with a bunch of trucks I followed after the convoy past our bach the same day.

Was a good drive. Pretty easy but still fun.

the dunes on the other side are okay but the beach is very soft.
we came back over the drop-off at blue house bay which was fun..
