I NEED HELP!!

I have a 91 surf ln130. 2lte engine. The water pump started leaking the other day, so i thought id better put a new one on. In the process of doing this realised i should do the cambelt at the same time as its a prick to get at. So i did. I spent ages neatly putting it all in and back together making triple sure all marks lined up on cam belt, crank shaft and fuel pump pully. Went to start it and it just cranked over without firing? thought it may be a fuel prob as the pump has been leaking 4 a bit but normally starts with some encouragement. However on the 3 or 4th go at starting the engine developed a loud clunk-metal on metal sound from the head as if the timing was out. :?
I am now stumped
So before i tear it apart again :( are there any obvious things i have missed as to why its doing this???
any help appreciated as this is my daily driver and am on a very limited student budget.

Ewwww that doesnt sound good....maybe you could put a timing light on it and see what results that turns out... :?

Knowing absolutely nothing about hilux's that must qualify me to contribute?

Usually when something that was going when you pulled it apart and then dosent go when you put it back together again suggests something hasnt been put back correctly or as it was?

Ya might have to start going back across everything you've done?

If it developed the noise as you were trying to start it makes me wonder if you tensioned the belt right it might have slipped a tooth or two ..... I wouldn't try and start it again untill your certain its still in time :( things could bend or brake if your timing is out!!
I always turn a motor over by hand after I've done anything with timing (pull plugs first to make it easyer  ) that way I know nothings gona get munted couse I stuffed up

Cheers Reece

Same here. Its amazing the damage a starter motor can cause if somethings not right

Yup i did the same. 4 revolutions of crankshaft by hand(although i did this with glowplugs in. Does this make a difference) then check alignment marks. Then did this again and checked tension on belt. it was all fine. Will strip it down again and make sure timing marks all align again. Hopefully its something simple

just as a note on cam belt tension i was told that in the middle of the longest run it should have 10mm deflection. Is this what others work to??

All good now

After stripping and rechecking all timing marks and found thay were ok and rotated by hand, which felt good and marks still ok.put back together again same as b4.did a naughty thing and just kept cranking till it started. Think it musta been a fuel prob all along, gave a few coughs and splutters and kicked into life slowly while bleeding itself, so drama averted and the supra demons  in my head have subdued once again.
Thanks to those who posted to help me stop and think.
