The Mudhog started to run rough 100M from home and just got back before it stopped and wouldn't run at all
Would turn over, but had no spark!!!
Spent Thursday afternoon and yesterday trying to get it sorted

I started making some phone calls and spoke to a few different guy's to try and sort it out and get an idea on what it might be

After spending 3 hours checking wiring and cleaning connection, we found it was a broken socket pin in the black amplifier box on the side of the dizzy, I only found it after Shaun pulled the plug off and said was there meant to be two or three pins in there?

After cleaning out more Woodhill Mud and having a check in the Haynes bible I could see that one of the pins was snapped off!!

I picked up a new one and started the job of replacing it.

First thing was that the dizzy needed to come out to get to the screws holding in the black box..Shit first time for everything I guess

I spent a fair bit of time cleaning around the dizzy and then marking everything as a few people had said if you get the dizzy back in out of place it's a bitch to get sorted

Marked the dizzy cap, leads, dizzy body to the block and pulled it out... Shit here goes nothing.

While I had the dizzy out I decided to try and waterproof it. I set about doing this by filling the two small holes on the bottom of the dizzy body (these let steam and water in) and drilling and tapping two new ones and fitting grease nipples that I had drilled out with a 3mm drill to just below the clips that hold the dizzy cap on. I had been told that you need to have air flow to help keep condensation from building up under the dizzy cap.

Now it's time to refit the dizzy...Here goes... lined up all the marks... first time they didn't all line up, pull it back out and try again, this time everything lined up

Now to try and start the truck.....Turned the key....and...it fired up as soon as the key was turned and sounded great

I finished fitting the air tube from the new grease nipples, one to the airbox to create suction and the other to in side the cab to supply clean dry air.

Now all I need to do is try it in some water!!!

The Truck has been running good but has had an odd miss at different times we couldn't sort out.

So I'm hoping that the new plug and water proofing will help this

Just drown it with the hose, or tip a 20L bucket of water
Over it and see what it does!!!

Just chop the annoying electrical parts off and cap like i did problem solved.

What are you using in its place? Are you running Mega squirt or something similar?

Megajolt you can buy a bolt on kit from the Uk

What sort of money was it?

Cheaper way which I did look on ebay for the edis, pick a part for coil packs, crank sensor and leads then you only buy trigger wheel and the Megajolt unit from triggerwheels still not a cheap option.

What motor are you running it on? 3.9 V8 or somethimg bigger?

I have a Mallory dizzy sitting here and might try that if this gives me more problems.

Still having a few small wiring problems, temp gauge not working
I replaced the sender and run a new test wire to it and still no go?
There is power at the end of the wire to the sender too?

I have another couple of instrument panels and I might try one of them to see if the gauge on the old panel is faulty?

Why not slap a HEI on it????

Cheap as chips off trade me, send the HEI and your Rover dizzy down to Howats in Wellington, $80 bucks later you have an HEI that fits your rover engine.

HEI about $120.

Im planning on going HEI with my 3.9 v8 once its up and running.

I'm pretty sure you can use an HEI with the likes of a MSII to control the timing of the HEI as well but I haven't quite figured out how yet. I think you need to get an HEI with a suitable ignition module inside...

I have blown yet another coil this weekend and are now in the hunt for a better replacement from the "Lucas Disease". Have looked into going to a Bosch conversion using a BIM024 module and MEC717 coil which has had great results in the "land of red sand" but will cost $250+ to do here in NZ.

The HEI conversion looks like another great option but has anyone done it to a 3.9? Have read lots on the 3.5 conversion. How much grinding is needed on the intake/head? Is there a direct no hassle drop in?

If anyone can help, that will be great, I am missing mud quite bad

go the hei with built in coil howie did mine and its brilliant but watch the chinese carbon as they tend to arc out the side .I changed mine for a accel delco carbon and it cured the problem .They will fit the 3.9 dizzy model also and even better with a accel cap .

Let us know if you want to go down that route, I have just found a local importer for MSD, Procomp, Mallory.....etc Dizzys. He sells off the shelf Procomp Chevy HEI dizzys for $119, much cheaper than what they are selling them for off TradeMe. I can organise Brian to do the work and then get yourself a set of leads, 8mm universal minimum. The local guy here does Accel for $95 off the shelf and is getting a price on some Street Fire ones....

I have already ordered a MSD Streetfire dizzy and hopefully have it in shortly once it arrives and Brian does his wonders...

I have a standard rover v8 dizzy on the shelf in the shed if anyone wants one to give to Brian to chop up for the HEI conversion.

Means you can keep your truck running untill the parts are made and your ready to do the instalation

i fitted the hei to my 3.9, little grinding on the power steer bracket from memory, tight fit, made a differnece to the power to i reckon.

I have both dizzys in with Brian as of yesterday....he is pretty snowed under with work but hopes to have them done by Friday.....

Just got to get a quality relay so I can wire direct off the Battery for maximum power
