bj70 engine choices......

hi all, i just blew up my 3b that had a turbo strapped to it, it cracked the rear main bearing cap and the snapped the cap bolts! and you can guess the results, very noisy! but supprisingly the crank hasnt been scored but i can be sure if its bent.

thinking im having to take the motor out anyway and probably buy another, im thinking about going all the way and going for a lexus v8 and auto box.

ive been told that early prado sx5 2lte boxes can be mated to the lexus motor, is this true, if so how?

and ive just seen a surf build thread where the lexus box was used and a hilux transfer case was bolted to the back of the auto. can you bolt a prado transfer case onto the back of a lexus box? this would give me the correct drive shaft offset instead of having one in the centre and one in the middle.

what other options are there out there, ive read many threads on the subject none of which contain actual facts, whats the go?

cheers, Tim.

What about other diesel options? 14bt 4cyl, or 12ht 6cyl both very good powerfull motors or a 350 chev? that would be easyier than the lexus options in ya cruiser.

The 14bt will bolt straight up to your gearbox being 4 cylinder, then alot of small stuff needs changing to get it plumbed up and working.
I had a 14bt in my 70series and now its in my 60series, Fantasic motors.

well thats funny you should mention that, ive just found a 350 chev with full conversion for 3k, just needs exhaust repairing and fitting!

looking at chev prices on trade me, im rather tempted.

nice easy conversion to do, the only thing you probably want to be aware of is your 3b gearbox has a longer input shaft and most chev/cruiser bellhousings are setup for the shorter petrol gearbox input shafts

do you have any measurements so as i can check and make up a spacer plate.

whats the go with a chev v8 in water? are they as bad as landrover v8s? they hate deep water!

I think the 3b gearboxs input shaft is about 37mm longer, its not hard to measure it all up, my first chev donor was done that way with a fat spacer between the bellhousing and gearbox

I've always had my trucks in lots of deep water and havent had any problems dropping cylinders or dying, the chevs have the dizzy right up the back behind the carb and aircleaner so they are reasonably well protected and most of them run HEI dizzys these days and they send plenty of juice down to the plugs
