Power Steering Pump - Rebuild or replace?

Post by MNC »

Ok so on the first shake down trip I've blown the power steering pump (power steering fluid pumps out around the front shaft by the pulley).

I noticed a pretty loud wining noise before heading out even on light turning duties.

I need a set up that can cope with 40" rubber and a front locker = heaps of pressure on steering (i could hardy turn wheel with front locker in and no PS  ).

I think the pump is out of a 70 series landcruiser (pump and reservoir in one unit) and my bro-in law made up the bracket to fit so I would prefer not to replace it if possible.

Image

That said my question is - should I get the existing pump rebuilt? and if so will it be up to the task? or should i replace? and if so with what?

Cheers,

i took my pump apart as had a leak from around the front pulley shaft too...

took seals in to a seal hydraulic styles place, got new seals for the entire pump for $8 or so and rebuilt it myself... still goes great..

I had wondered if it would have been just old dry seals...

So you've had no problems since?

Do you remeber the name of the place you went to? Someone like Hose Doctor or Enzed? rather than Toyota?

I agree with nibby i done the same to mine, just make sure you take the bits with you into seal imports so they can measure the parts were the seals go, to make sure you get the rite ones. The pumps are very simple to work on also.

Dude, that's $460 vs $8 seals. Thanks for the link though.

My preference is to stick with current set up if its going to be up to the job (no more modding required that way).

OK, so pump is now out of truck and I'm going to strip it down.

Looks like I'll be paying these guys a visit:

When you take them apart make sure you do it carefully theres alot of springs in them and if you rip into it they will spring out and you may loose some. :D

If you check out the photo I've posted above you can see an oil cooler mounted on the radiator shroud. That is my power steering fluid cooler.

No fan on it but the front of the shroud is cut out in front of it and the main fan seams to suck a bit of air through.

On a side note is there anyway to increase the power output of pumps simply like drilling out a restrictor hole or something. I'm running hilux ifs box and v6 commy pump and wonder if there is any way to get stronger steering?

I've always been told you can go out 1 drill size on chev p/s pumps so I guess that'll probably go for most p/s pumps, Beer Cruiser did it on his truck but he still cant pull his pitball tyres around properly, Bundy down here reckons hes going to try a mitzy truck pump or something like that on one of his cruisers so that might be worth looking at for increased flow/volume/pressure?

could also either upgrade springs on inner pump for the vanes or increase the spring rating on the pressure relief valve for the pump..

Dude, all I can say is I'm not looking forward to trying to get all those springs back into place....

OK, for those who are interested and love a good pic fest here goes,

Pump out:
Image

Front of pump off, shaft and spring out:
Image

The warning about the springs.... well this pump has 24 of them  :
Image

I'm a bit concerned about the wear on the inner sleeve and shaft - anyone does this look like an issue to you?:
Image

Image

Anyhow, the infringing $8 seal (that has already cost me more than that in lost power steering fluid!!!:
Image

And just to give you an idea of most the parts together:
Image

I'll replace the O Rings at the same time - might as well while I have it apart.

Sweet, so the same place sells replacement bushes?

I had a go at putting one bank of springs back in - it didn't go well  Couple of beers and a bit of patience and I'm sure it will be fine

I'm having trouble getting those bushes out - Looks like they would need to be pressed out and the new ones pressed in.

Can anyone recommend a place in the north Auckland area to do this?

Cheers,

I took that cap off the back then used a socket the same size as the bush to knock the bush out.

Second trip out and second blown seal on the PS pump (one around the front output shaft that runs to the pulley again) :?

I'm wondering if the gearing is wrong (custom set up - engine speed/pulley/pump are from different trucks)? Or I need to drill out the restrictor hole, or fit a light commercial truck ps pump???

Any suggestions (such as the below) or what you've tried would be appreciated - cheers,

did you replace the bushing in the front of the pump, one you showed was worn, also there should be a bleed hole to take the pressure off the seal, high pressure fluid can get to the seal via the bushing, the bleed hole lets the fluid return to the resevior or but if that bleed hole is blocked or partially obstructed then the pressure can force the seal out and leak,
i would be stripping the pump and try to determine where the pressure is coming from and the bleed is not restricted

cheers

I have one of those Trail Gear hydro pumps you can have for $160.. its my spare but I'll just import another if mine ever breaks. I just might even have spare hydro rams for you.... once you have hydro you wont look back. But I cant remember if this truck is road worthy..
Dont follow me. i'll get stuck and need a tow..

She's not a road truck... Thats 2 x go hydro - its a strong contender. Would it suit the 60 series box?

Na, I replaced the rubber bits that were easy to take out and put new ones back in...

The pressure relieve valve should be giving out before the seals right? might send the pump in for a proper rebuild.... :?

the seals should not see any pressure, hence the bleed hole, pump makes over a 1000psi, and little bit of rubber on the shaft seal aint gonna hold that back, it needs the bleed hole.

Yip, I'm sure you are 100% on the money... I obviously didn't fix this the first time and that's why its happened again. Cheers,
