Falcoon rears
Falcoon rears
What are peoples thoughts on just putting falcoons in the rear and doing a 2" sping lift in the front, with possble a 25mm lift from shackles if need be. Im not looking for massive lift, just want it too flex and to keep the centre of gravity low.
If i was to go down rears up front this is the expensive part as a new cross member and high steer would be require plus all the extra's.
I feel comfortable to do the coons in the rear myself after recently seeing another members coon set up.
Cheers Lawrence

Re: Falcoon rears
first off try searching, been talked about a million times!
plus you with rears up front you dont need the drop crossmember at all, it helps but no nessary, you will need longer shackles though.

SASed Isuzu Mu - hilux diffs, Rears up front, disc brake conversion, ifs hub swap, crossover steering, and legal!!!!
Re: Falcoon rears
With out the crossmember the angle of the leafs looks all wrong. What im trying to achieve is to do a low cost conversion.
I know its been done over and over again, but people are always doing RUF too, not just coons up front so i am wonder what peoples opinions are on just coons in the rear.

Re: Falcoon rears
trust me ive seen 3 hiluxs without the crossmember and rears up front, all you may require is some caster wedges to get alighment right, plus a added bonus not using the crossmember it keeps the truck lower

Re: Falcoon rears
i personally dont rate the coon swap, they are primative, often sag heaps/uneven, snap easily.
they give heaps of flex but are shit on road. cause massive axle tramp and usually requires a track rod, do it properly first time.

Re: Falcoon rears
So are you saying go coils in the rear?
Re: Falcoon rears
definatly, bit more work involved to set it up correctly, but worth it

did they use a flat or drop pitman arm?
must have used a flat and fitted the steer pump up higher giving a bigger angle on the drag link???? (or is it the tie rod that goes from pitman arm to pass side steer arm? can never remember

Re: Falcoon rears
one guy has the flat arm and the other had 3inch lift springs so he just ran with the standard drop arm

Re: Falcoon rears
That would be a huge lift if you had 3" lift rears then put them up front with im not after.
So the question remains, would it still ride and handle fine with coons in the back and standard 2" lift springs in the front?

Re: Falcoon rears
i say yes.i put falcons in the back of the brother n laws truck and it drover fine, slightly softer than what we wanted but we did use the 4leaf pack not the 6 so was to be expected.at the end of the day plenty of people have run falcon springs.some who did the job properly and set up correctly had a good vehicle.others who didn't got a poorer quality ride

Re: Falcoon rears
Go on jess go coils ditch those crappy leaves
an on going joke his truck handles awsomely on leaves but the grass is always greener
One of the trucks he is talking about was a custom pack based off coons but reset to give 11" of lift what the owner wanted... articulation was nuts
but so was the body roll
Another is a trailer queen with a commy he is the one that has been braking them, to my knowledge he is the only one I've heard of who has broken them
The last one is sitting in my shed, chev powered double cab and the owner has told me the ride (on and off road) improved considerably after fitting coons over the 2"+ HD leaves it came with, resently I added a torque arm to the diff just because I had concerns about his heavy foot and the chev not because of any issue
I'd be happy with what your talking about but understand the front wont flex as well as RUF because you will have to keep the torque arm if you don't do a X over steering conversion

Re: Falcoon rears
Im the one that was breaking the falcons above, a simple torque arm sorted it. the whole point with the falcons is its a cheap remedy improvement. they work if you put the effort into getting it right.
one thing to watch out for when acquiring the springs is that the leaf pack is attached to the falcon diff with a large sandwich clamp with rubber in between so when looking at them they look mint but when disassembled once you get them home they are rusty at a point where the most leverage is imposed. rusty enough to seriously weaken them. I was using 4 leafs out of the 6 leaf packs as the custom u bolts wernt quite long enough to fit 6. now running 5 and torque arm. the 6 pack may be strong enough to handle it without a torque arm.
6 leaf packs are the ones you want from the utes and station wagons of the 80s era. xd, xe, xf,

Re: Falcoon rears
Thanks guys
I will see what leaf pack i can pick up for cheap, and i plan of adding the torque arm to as, this should not be too much extra work while the truck is off the road.
Anyone in Christchurch with a set they know of or are not using?
Cheers
