Hilux wheel bearing destrution

Post by bda4130 »

My truck seems to be thrashing inner front wheel bearings quite regularly, when I pull them out, the outer bearings are mint and still greasy, but the inner bearings are bone dry and real pitted. I even had one totally collapse, luckily I was only doing 50k as it totally locked up the left front!

I'm assuming this is probably caused by water contamination? Would appreciate any recommendations of which grease is best, and any tips on preventing the inner bearing shitting itself in future. Read that someone runs moreys oil stabilizer instead of wheel bearing grease, does this actually work?
Cheers, Daniel.

First thing to find out why the grease is being washed out?
Is the seal gone.....damaged?
Then look at a good grease.

one assumes you are replacing the seal while replacing the bearings, if so is the face the seal runs on badly grooved? 2 options here, speedi sleeve the seal face, or put stub axle in the lathe and remachine the seal face to a non standard size, make sure the seal is available first and would not go down more than 2 mm max. i used to run diff oil in my hubs on my trials truck, never stuffed a bearing after that, also when the seal does crap out the oil leaks out and you know it leaking .

cheers

Check spindle seal. There are different sizes (I have been caught on this before) make sure you are getting correct one.
Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!

dumb question maybe but are you packing the wheelbearings with grease properly and not just shoving new bearings in?

Is it happening to both sides or just one side and are you putting the truck into much water?

Yup, have been packing them properly, and it happens more to the left side, which leads me to believe it may be the seal/stub axle mating surface that's letting shit in, will have a closer look at that... And yup it sees a fair bit of water

Did you do a IFS hub swap as part of your SAS, pretty sure the IFS inner seal has a bigger ID than the Hilux seal.

Yeah I did do an ifs hub swap, and I am aware that there are 2 different size seals. Gonna pull them apart tonight and have a good look at them and try and nut out what's happening
