aftermarket ones generally connect to alternator.
if you injection pump has a pulse output you might be able to find a factory one that will work with it.
sorry do not know much on that engine.

Yes there are aftermarket units which use the alternator, it needs to be calibrated in as different pulley sizes effect it etc etc
There is also one which uses a sensor and picks up the teeth on the flywheel.

But as said, if the pump has a senor already you might be able to tap into that.
I am doing one at the moment with my manual injector pump install... The 2LT pump tacho sensor is different to the 1KZTE.
If I can get the tacho to register something then I can calibrate it to the pulses from the new pump. Well thats the theory.

there are kits for that, not cheap tho.
for my surf i changed the gauge in the dash. i used a hiace one which i made fit.
you might find a hilux one that fits in ie off one with a 5l motor.

Yeah I have been thinking about that, but my factory Tacho has the Diff lock light in it....So want to try and keep it if I can.

Hi

I had the same problem when I did my diesel install as I wanted to keep my dash original. This is what I used to connect the original gauge to the W terminal of the alternator. If your alt does not have a W terminal then your local auto sparky can put one on easily.

this unit is compatible with 4/6/8 cyl original engines and can be calibrated once fitted using a optical tacho. easy peasy.

not bad price with the US NZ exchange rate at the moment. was only like 10 USD postage as well from memory. There was nothing like it I could find in NZ.

hope it helps.

I was told on Thursday by someone who has just done the 1KZ-TE / 2LT manual pump mod to his Prado, that Parrots in Shakeshake will sort this for about $60.

can you find what was done?
i would guess they probably just changed the gauge.
when i was looking around the cost of a converter to use the different pump on stock gauge, it was in several hundred $$ range.

Not sure what was done, just know it was only $60.
Would imagine it was a converter between the gauge and the sender unit.

I flicked them an email.....but with Xmas holidays don't expect a reply anytime soon.
I have been doing some googling, and you can get pulse converters ..
I had mine going and it under reads....
So the 1KZTE had more pulses per rev than the 2LT...I think...
I have a hand held tacho gauge so can read the rev's on the main pulley to compare.
Also some talk about putting a shut (adjustable resistor 5k ohm) across the outputs in the gauge...
But I am in no hurry at this stage, have my guard off chasing some water leaks thru the factory seams....And still have the feedback cable for TPS to do.

Been looking on the Anything Electronic site and it seems they may have products to do this too.
Check this page; http://www.anythingelectronic.co.nz/pro ... part=tacho
They are working these three days, so give them a ring.
Working on my ECU, so don't give them anything more )) !
