Re: Tims old surf 4sale again
yea might be sold i think, i made an offer but was to late.
I didn't really want another hilux with leaves and a supra engine (with all the same down sides mine had) but i would of had it for the right price

Never argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level then beat you with experiance!
Re: Tims old surf 4sale again
haha I made an offer to, which he accepted!
however....I was just setting up the payment when he emailed back and said some guy had turned up with cash!
I didn't really need it either.
So who was it.........?
Must be a local. He said he was pretty desperate to sell it and my offer was 6g.
Oldyella (pete) went to have a look at it for me and said it looked like the oil leak was the rear main seal and said the shakes were so bad he didn't want to take it over 80 but that was most likely just the mudzillas I would have thought. has got a lot rougher over the last couple of years by the sounds of it.
He said it had dirty 30s in it. I take it they are different to the longfields that used to be in there? I wonder why they changed that?
Someone will enjoy it.
Now to see who gets the black one haha I have made a few offers on that over the last month or two but the guy is selling it on behalf of a mate who is over seas and he is really bad at getting back to ya.
Rear diff is stuffed and the steering box was leaking badly. But that was all I could really see without taking it for a drive (cos of the diff)
It still looks pretty solid but has had a bloody hard life would be a fair bit of work getting a warrant for it I would have thought and it's questionable as to how fully certified it is. I don't think there is a body mount bolt on it that isn't bent over at a right angle! I think its about time that one turned into a trailer queen. also doesn't have the high steer arms that tims one did.
May the best man win haha I don't think it will be me. my tow wagon isn't up to the task of a trailer queen just yet and I could probably get my ln106 going pretty well if I put the money into that.
Cheers,
Pete

Re: Tims old surf 4sale again
i would of wanted to check it out, i heard a rumour that when it was in queenstown the owner didnt like how it rev'd and a mechanic swapped out both full diffs/housings for second hand units and that all the good bits went to waste like the longs and 5.29 locker diffs etc. Not sure how much the current owner knows about it but congrats to who ever got it. My offer was 6k as well
he reckoned a guy was coming to look at it today for 7k

Re: Tims old surf 4sale again
Hmmm well that's interesting to know haha. though in the guys pics it still has the same housing that tim sold it with so would be interesting to know how much truth there is to the story. Could still be some...

The shakes have to be tyres, wheel bearings, ball joints or something similar, I won't say what speed I was doing but I had it singing big time once when heading from Springfield to Chch womens for the birth of our 3rd child

Yea that's what I had figured. couldn't have been anything serious as the major stuff hadn't seemed to have changed since you sold it and it was driving well.

Re: Tims old surf 4sale again
I purchased said truck!
And boy has it had a hard time! I don't think it's seen maintenance in a few years.
The wobble appeared to be a buggered wheel bearing and the tyres.
I threw my 37's on after doing the wheel bearings and no wobbles at all.
Appart from slight wiggling from my tyres wheel weights not really being there anymore.
It also had a buggered front left CV and rear diff was noiser than ever.
Which is funny cos the owner I got it off reckoned he'd just dont both these bits, maybe he meant he needed to do both these bits...
Nevermind, I only really bought it to have fun in the holidays as I'm sick on not having a rig to get dirty. Mines is still a couple of months away.
So I drove it to CHCH from Dunedin on the mudzillas, fine at 100kph.
Tidied the front end up(cheers Tim for lending me a CV), threw new diff oil in it, threw the 37's on and drove it to Nelson for the xmas break.
Made it sweet as. Just noisey, I thought the gearbox was on the way out but it turns out after 10mins on 4wding down the simpliest of tracks the back diff decided it had had enough!
Limped home to the bach on the front diff and spent New Years eve swapping front to rear. Got it all buttoned up and ready to drive again by 9pm so still got a few beverages in.
Anyway, the rear diff and pinion are F@$%ed!! They must have been more damaged than I first thought as the bottom of the houseing was FULL of teeth.
I don't have a picture but I'll get one this week, it's quite impressive damage.
The thing drives like a F1 car now. Its so quiet compared to what it was and I turns out the gearbox is sweet but I'll give it a lube shortly.
It's going to be for sale again soon. I planned on just having it for the holidays then I decided to keep it. But now I have to go to the North Island for work for 6 months so I can't take it with me. I'll be tidying it up a bit further and someone can have some real fun in it. It's a great rig!
So for those who missed out.... keep ya eyes open...

Re: Tims old surf 4sale again
So now that you have had the diffs apart were all the bits still in there? Lockers and stronger cvs? And what ratio did the diffs end up being?

Re: Tims old surf 4sale again
Yup, all the bits were there, 5.29's, lockers and i havent counted the splines on the CV's yet but they are shiney and look like the longfields ive got in my other truck. Apparently they are Dirty 30's now that previous owner imported himself after breaking a longfield.....?
Anyone know where to purchase new ring and pinions?
I havent looked into it yet.
Cheers Daniel
