SJ413 to 4AGE repower gearbox box queries HELP PLEASE

Post by shayd1 »

Hi,
Im wanting to repower my 413 with a 4age and am wanting info from people who have done this/or know how to go about it, i would like to go with the swift transplant as i have read it is easier to do but the price of them puts me off.i allready have a 4age rwd engine complete so it looks like the cheaper way to go for me.

Mounting the engine to me will be no problems, its the drivechain i am curious of before i get into it,I have a k50 box to suit 4age but the k50 clutch is to small for the 4age pressure plate and tends to slip and you can t buy a clutch plate to suit. k50 box probally want last that long ever. My other options a i have a w55 alloycase gearbox but am unsure if it will fit done the tunnel as the 413 tunnel looks damn small(will i need to modify it?)also it will need a bellhousing to suit 4age-can you buy aftermarket ones anywhere to suit w55 or even t50 ,i will buy 1 of them if i have to. if the tunnel has to be modified to fit the w55 box will the t50 box fit more snug without moving the tunnel?.
theres a swaybar under neath the front of the gearbnox, will that need to be moved or removed?

i also have a 3a in a ae85 trueno that is auto the bellhousing is cast and removable from that and will bolt up to 4age block, anyone one ever modified one to fit the t50 box or w55,can this be done very easily?

and lastly the will the standard 413 transer box and diffs handle the extra torque?, i dont really wanna go to the extreme of fitting hilux diffs and stuff like that

any easy ways out?
any info will be much appreciatted

Where are you located ?

A t50 box will fit into the tunnel , have one in my samurai . Not sure about the others but I doubt it as they are big and the t50 onlyjust fits . There is/has been a t50 with the output for a suzuki on trade me for a while now . My box is rather noisy so was looking at it but i would like an auto . You can buy bellhousings for the t50 to suit 4ages factory , again trade me .
the samurai drive train should be ok with the 4age , sure you could break the axles but with a little care life should be fine .

Interested to know the size of the 3a auto compaired to the k50 ? And the bolt pattern it has for bellhousings .

Cheers

I've put about 60000 km on my 4A-GE/k50 equipped zuk. the only time I've had clutch slip is on the road when nailing it in 4th or 5th under load & it only happens rarely, back off a little & it'll grab again. I'm not sure what the plate is in it, a mechanic mate sourced one for me that was only 5mm smaller than the std 4A-GE one. It's actually pretty easy to make a custom puck clutch if yu have an old core too.

I have lunched a couple of k50 boxes but swapping the internals out of a cheap & common DX k50 is pretty easy & you're back on the road.

A T50 is better tho, & the next easiest option. Unless you have a TIG & a milling machine at your disposal it's probably easier to buy a bellhousing off Trademe than make one.

My drivetrain has held up well, I've bent axles but never broken one, never done a CV, did a back diff a while back but the vehicle has done 300000+ km, t-case has been sweet. I have done a lot of U-joints though & would recommend upgrading the rear one to a hilux unit or something similar as it'll cost less in the long run.

You could of course just buy my old one & swap on your good bits: $2500, certed, with a detachable warn winch. It'll cost you at least $2K to do the conversion unless you have the hell workshop & all the skills...

There's no swaybar under there IIRC, just a cheesy little body crossmember that can be unbolted & thrown away.

No worries with the cert. You'll need a certed or approved welder to do the engine mounts, a driveshaft loop, make sure the fan is guarded, brake & fuel lines aren't too close to the exhaust, all basic stuff. Just go & talk to the cert guy about what he wants to see before you start the job.

"1UZ-FE" & "Basic Wiring" are not usually words used in the same sentence

I'm running mine on a Link ECU, much easier. Plenty of guys have 'em going well on the stock ECU but they tend be the blokes with pretty good auto electronics skillz. Have a look at lextreme.com there might be some info there.
