hi gents, happy new year!!

Well last night i pulled out of shops in Manukau and heard a little clunk and it did not sound nice at all, then the little clunk turned into a big clunking sound.
it sounds like a bolt in a diff as i know what that sound like (well not one bolt but 5  ) i know that its not the diff's as it is there at idle.
it gets really bad when you put any power to the d/train at all.
so far i have dropped all the oil out of G/Box,T/case,F/diff,B/diff and i can not see any metal or glitter.

105 Series Landcruser manual
Safari turbo and intercooler
ARB lockers front & back
2" lift
and on 35's
Thanks
Phil

Landcruser manual

when you say its there at idle do you mean when the vehicle is stationary or when the vehicles moving with no load on the drive train?

If its manual, the flywheel could use that two piece one which the rubber bit flogs out that joins the inside with the outside........(Dual Mass Flywheel)
Fix is a solid fly wheel..
You need to try and listen and locate exactly where its coming from....
As you have said if you are stationary and idling...Then diffs, center diff and transercase are out of the equation.
Only left with engine, clutch, input shaft on gearbox....

so they must have the same setup as the surfs then?

They could be.....Yours has the 1HZ?? doing a bit of googling shows some had the dual mass flywheel...
You may need to give Toyota a ring and see if yours does....
Not sure how to confirm it is .....

Can someone on here who had one fail like to comment........

There was a guy on trademe selling solid kits for the 1HZ and 1PZ

When my dual mass flywheel on the prado packed up the clutch went first, was told with the weights moving freely it causes alot of slip and overheating so the plate frys. Would be more thinking the thrust bearing. try sitting at idle not in gear and get on and off the clutch. If it's the gear box will make noise once fully off. If it's the thrust bearing as soon as you put any pedal will get louder.
If input shaft think it will sound like gearbox.
Good luck with it

Chuck the transfer case into neutral then run it through the gears with the motor running it'll let you know if its the gear box. If its noisy in every gear apart from 4th it'll be related to your countershaft in the gearbox and if its noisy in every gear it'll be the mainshaft.

well today i just about popped my ahole pulling the box out, note to one self do not pull out a landcruser g/box on your own!!
everything on the flywheel looks to be i good working order, well as far as i can see anyway.
i split the g/box from the t/case, i gave the input a turn over with my hand and there is some not good things happening in there!

has anyone had a play inside a R151F gear box?

i also looks like that i am not the first one in there also as there is hammer marks and scrap marks from spliting the box apart before,is there something wrong with these gear boxes??

Phil

Had my R151 apart when 5th got a bit of a rattle, not to hard if you have a good manual. Don Kyatt has all the parts you will need. they are in Manukau and good to deal with.

Options:

1. have a go at stripping it and rebuilding it yourself

2. Take it into the shop $$$ and get it rebuilt

3. Find a secondhand one

4. Sell the truck as is $$$ :(

A R150 box will bolt to your bellhousing but has slightly different gear ratios to the R151F

The R151f is supposed to be a good strong box and is used in Toyota v8 applications as well as 4wds.

I'd be taking the front cover off and have a look at input shaft and trust bearings before looking for another gearbox.
Any 2nd hand one is an unknown and you could end up doing the same thing agin in 6 months time.

Thats some good info thanks UBZ, i think im going to try and rebuild myself as money is a little tight at the moment.

i have just pulled the box apart (well split it) and the Counter Gear is well facked and also the gear on the first part of the input shaft all the others look to be ok.

so i well be ringing Don Kyatt on monday for some prices and see if they have got the parts that i need,i was thinking that i should do all the bearings in the box that do guys think as i am lookin at keeping the crusier for a long time.

is there anyone out there that can lend a helping hand as i am not to sure what i am doing, payment will be in green or brown bottles and a bbq dinner

i would just like to say thanks to all the guys so far for all the input, this is what makes 4x4ing so much fun for me and my family as everyone help one another with no hesitations. :)
