nissan safari high oil pressure

Hi.

I have a 1992 safari, 4.2 Diesel.

Had problems today with high oil pressure (just over 6) and oil light coming on.

With engine turned off oil press gauge sits on 4., when running, sitting on about 6, and hardly varying when the engine is revved.

Am inclined to think it is simply a guage/oil press sensor fault, but would be interested to know if anyone has any suggestions.

Cheers

my oil gauge goes off the end and then back down all the time i think they get mud in them as they all seem to play up. dont worry about it i bet it will come right. as long as there is oil in the crankcase it should be ok.

Pull the sender off and test the oil pressure with a proper gauge. Should be around 20psi at idle and approx 60psi at 2500-3000rpm.

Could be the oil pressure regulator........................

when diesel boy said "proper gauge" he ment a mechanical gauge, pick one up at repco or supercheap

thanks for the replies...

will get a mechanical gauge and check for sure today..

is it much of a job getting at the sender unit?

also, am assuming on the safari, both the oil light and press gauge come off the same sender unit?? is this correct?

any good ideas on where to buy a replacement oil sender unit?? would a used one, say off a wreck or something be an option? - got better things to spend $150 on at the moment!!

cheers..

from memory, i think its under the oil filters . maybe easier from underneath?
dont go buying a proper one just yet, it may be the gauge on your dash
i will look in the haynes manual tonight and see if theres an easy way to do it

Well, i actually ment a pressure gauge that you screw straight into the block for testing oil pressure. Most mechanics will hav one.
Its a ten min job to get the sender off. Bit of a tight squeeze with the big spanner needed, but not to bad and you do it through the engine bay. Its just nfront of the oil filters under a black rubber dust cover.

In my mind thats the easiest way of testing it, then you will know if its the guage or somthin mechanical in one simple test

the thread will be a 1/8 bsp or npt fitting,
from blackwoods paykels ask for a 05531739 - list price is $13.57+gst and hamilton has one in stock -killarney rd frankton
its a bottom entry 1/8bsp 0-140psi and it has a brass thread to deform if its npt
(only 1 thread per inch different)

just got oil pressure tested.

30psi at idle,

70-80psi when revved.

guess i've got problems...!

going to reaplce oil filters to start with (in case filter with bypass valve is causing problems), then who knows where to start after that....bugger!

Hmmm, thats high!!!

I'll dig out my workshop book from wherever its hiding tonight and double check the pressures for ya.

The regulators simple to get to, just a spring loaded valve located around the filter housing somewhere from memory. I'l check that out in the book to if i can find.

Its pretty rare to have problems of this sort in a TD42, so i would think it will be a simple fix. Fingers crossed aye!!!!!!

its not that high.. im getting 40lb at idle hot and about 70 cold
. i cant actually think of a bad point about having high oil pressure,
its like complaining about having 12lt of oil in your sump
