Future Shineys Trip

Post by kiwipete »

Am looking at organising a trip for our social club that is suitable for shineys in the Chch / Canterbury area at this time of the year.
We have done the Waipara River, both up and down stream from the main highway bridge and Rhyton Stations, clay track to the Pinnacles and a little of the Harper/Wilberforce Rivers too.

Just wondering if any of you can suggest something suitable for us please.
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

you could go up to lake sumner. easy track to the first lake then gets a bit more challenging from there, but ideal for shinys and good place to go if your never been there before.

Hi Kaney, sure you will be welcome to tag along, some are real shineys, others are club members. We try to cater for the weakest link so everyone can participate, but do suggest a minimum of AT tyres tho, along with basic recovery gear.
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

Good suggestion there 4wdnuts, I haddn't thought of that, been there and it is a great drive indeed.

Unfortunatley i am outa action for 5 weeks. My arm is in plaster with a broken bone in my wrist.
So this time will be good to sort out some trips for the social club.

The Kowhai River (just south of Amberley... runs from the sea, inland) is a good trip... lots of water crossings but all shallow, some soft stuff... and you can drive right out onto the beach and have a picnic if its a nice day (or plenty of nice spots in the river bed itself for a cuppa and cucumber sammies).

Or the Waipara river mouth... few muddy bits - few wet bits - few fun bits... then you can drive north along the beach to the rocks and thats a great place for a picnic.

Whatever you do, just stay in the river, and below the high tide mark when on the beach... :)

Update:
North Pegasus Bay is no longer easily accessible via the beach (heavy flow of Waipara has opened a channel to the sea); even at half tide the sea washes over and the terrain underneath is treacherous. Also, the alternative route via lagoon now requires deep wading (read snorkel), as the bottom has been further eroded.

Supralux, thanks for the Kowhai suggestion, it too is a nice little trip, lotsa water in it too I see. Have had a play in it when I first got my Terrano.
Just how far up-stream can you go?

Have done the Waipara mouth on a previous trip, it was then that I realised Terrano's can swim. Water was 2" above the window sills and filling the floor quickly, about 6" on it.
It all started when I nosed into a long hole, slipped a little and couldnt reverse out. I knew the bottom was firm and sloping up to the exit, so in I went.
Couldnt understand why no-one else followed me, opting instead for an alternate route.
Only dammage was a tide mark in my headlights, wet lunch n carpets. Headlights now have breathers.

Random Spur Rd is one trip we will be doing when the weather dries the ground out.
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

kowhai river you can go up to marshmans rd. you can go further than that but the farmers up there can get a bit grumpy, and yes i do know they cant do jack about it really but i know these people and they will chase you if they think your up to no good! as for north pegasus bay, how long ago did you go thru leithfield? i went through about a week after the last rainy patch and water was just below headlight level on my hilux. has it got deeper since then?

also have you thought about doing cramptons bush road? it goes from the back of amberly up mt grey into the ashley forest. theres a lake up there where you can go walk abouts and carry on around to the picnic area. send me a pm if you want to know more as i have access to all the forest up there and can arrange for the gates to be open if they are shut for some reason.

Thanks heaps for the Ashley Forest info, that sounds like a goer indeed. I will be in touch.
Kowhai, i have only ventured up as far as Sefton rd, so will have another look further up to Marshmans rd.
