Hi Heath,

I am just wondering why you are telling guys to stay out, when you are all the way down in the South Island :?

It is not like this place is a secret anyway I have seen heaps of people go up there.

Yes I have heard the story's about unexploded ordinances up there, and yes about it being restricted. But if you get caught then that's there Issue, as for unexploded ordinances well I have been told that the Army are not aloud to leave the things they use up there as it is Illegal unexploded or not. Also Iam not saying it is right to go drive/ ride up there but it is at your own risk I say.

I just had to say that, that's all my 2cents.

people will go places there not supposed to go and that has always and will always happen thats nothing new but the problem is it dosent give these forums a good look when forum users are publicly organising and promoting for people to go where they shouldnt, if your going to go to those places you can organise it privately by txt, pm, email or whatever and its your business and not the forums business to be publicly seen by the whole of NZ

Mmmmmmmmmmmmm have a read of these quotes from Heath, then have a guess what his job was up until recently............

Cant wait till next week when I will be up in the bombing range working. Yeah okay they pay me but I would do that shit for nothing. We have a few big bangs to do and I will be playing / patroling either in our hilux or on the quad. And of course after hours there is the fishing. Beauty is I get to be there legitimately.

MAN I LOVE MY JOB sometimes

Went 4wding at the Kaipara bombing range this week (sand is really soft right now - needs some rain), blew some shite up - 2 tonnes in 300kg piles and drank a little alcohol (not during work but afterwards).

And yes I do love that part of my job - will miss that more than anything else. A blast wave is such a rush

Bombing run. Bomb dropped, it buries in the sand and fails to detonate. Usually they wait if it doesnt go off for a few hours/days and then go dig it up. Bomb Alpha is one they cant find. went in but with the soft sand pockets they can travel quite a way under ground and not all travel in a straight line. Of course whern they are having a big drop and you have maybe 8 going in at the same time you get simultaneous explosions so close together it is easy to miss one not going off. And counting craters doesnt work either cause they can fill each others in. Great place but dangerous, but there are tonnes of other places to play - Woodhill 4wd park for instance Worth the $$$

If it means you have to drive through the bombing range, then no, it's not allowed

It isnt illegal for them to leave ordnance (it's an airforce bombing range not army by the way), whoever uses it are supposed to clear the area before leaving but sometimes after searching you have to assume its clear (if you drop 12 500lb bombs in a single stick how do you know that they all went off? - that much going off in a small area obscures everything and the sound waves overlap so you cant count).

Back when we had sky hawks they fired thousands of 20mm rounds with explosive tips and not everyone went off (if they didnt hit hard enough sometimes they just got buried) and thye are everywhere and often work their way to the surface with the moving sands. In the event of a large blast (say a 1000lb bomb) sometimes the charge fractured and lumps of undetonated explosives were blown around.

I guess the biggets danger is the tonnes of razor sharp shrapnel sitting just below the surface. Waiting for your tire walls, or maybe your kids skin to shred (small chance I know but kids slide down dunes, play in sand), why take the chance.

At the end of the day its restricted because of the dangers hidden away in the sand, not because they want to keep this prime play ground to them selves. There are areas free for use so use them and not the range.

Oh and why do I care being down here now? Because if I didnt say anything and someone got killed or hurt then I wouldnt be comfortable with not trying to warn about the danger. If someone decides even with a warning to go then that's their problem.

Of course the fact that defence might get shitty with 4wders and shut down access to other areas might happen too (ever been to the waiouru area on a guided tour? Maybe that will be lost if we push into their areas illegally). Of course should they confiscate your vehicle (under the armed forces property act - not sure which one now) it might be hard to get back too.

Thats why I comment. I care about the wider 4wd community and their future access and beleive it or not I care about the image we have as abusers of the environment.

If you choose to go thats fine but actions have consequences. It may take time, but eventually Kharma comes home to roost.

And that's my 2 cents worth.
