A340 Auto mods

Post by kbushnz »

Hi All
Anyone out there played around with their A340 auto's. Those ones found in everything from Hilux to Prado and some of you on your LUX V8's.
Been reading some Supra threads in the States..
Would be nice to get a quicker gear change and take out a bit of the mushiness.
This thread has some great info and easy to do....
http://www.supraforums.com/forum/showth ... take-a-nap)
Note its a long read......
From what I can read the accumulators prolong the gear change and let them slip a bit. Producing heat in the process....
Also up the internal line pressure a bit...
Might give it a go.

I've read that thread before... it's tempting to have a fiddle with the accumulators, but I don't know if we need to. The shifts seem ok off-road, and a harsher shift might shorten the life of our little 8" rear diff!?

(racing around on tarmac in low-range 2wd is a different story - hits the rev limiter in-between gears)

Our auto guy suggested it would be a good idea, but use aftermarket clutch packs as well, that were designed to handle the faster shift. He said it would keep the temps down and prolong the life of the box. We have the clutch packs sitting in the cupboard, but nothing has gone wrong with the auto so we have never had to decide whether we would do the mods or not.

the A340 auto trans found parked behind a 2JZGTE is internally different to the ones found behind other toyota engines. they have VERY heavy internals unlike the others which have run of the mill inners

Well I am going to give this a go, need to drop my auto soon has a leak in the front seal......If I can halve the delay...that would be good....
Not interested in laying rubber...Hahhaha not with a 4cyl diesel running 35 inch tyres.. leave that to the V8 lads.....
So while its out, flip her over and put in some shims.
Just need to decide on how much.
The supra lads use 6 to 8mm
The 4x4 guys use 10 to 15mm
Not sure why....maybe something to do with the different rev limits between the little fours and the sixes...
Or its the A340F /A343F v A341E.
And the A341E the supra guys have has a taller first gear and more clutch packs etc etc....
Hmmmmmm

The autos are set up differently depending on what motor they have in fronty of them.
Different flanges , plates & discs in the brakes.
Different piston stroke of over drive brake
Different Actuator springs

I have part of the A343f-m manual if you want it.
PM me & i can email it to you

Thanks for that pdf...
Some of the springs in the accumulators have different lengths between a std A340....1KZTE ones are a few mm longer...
Interesting....

if you need more manuals:

I've fixed the A340 links so they should all work...

It's more a notepad for me now, rather than a site for public consumption. hence why the links are out of date ;-)

Ive shimmed the accumulators in the prado auto behind my v8, works mint as, and is easy to do with the trans still in the truck, I put about 15 mm of washers in the 1st and 2nd gear pots and it sharpend up the shifts heaps.
I used to have the line pressure cranked right up, but have since gone back to standard.

Thanks for the feedback....
How did you crank up the line pressure?
Pull the cable out fully....
Did you adjust the valve in the Valve Body as well ?

Was thinking about 15mm is first accumulator and 12mm in the second one....

Cheers

I just had the cable pulled right out, but have since gone back to having it connected to the throttle butterfly. I noticed my trans ran hotter with the pressure cranked up.
Tried the same thing on my diesel prado, but didnt really like the way it changed gears with the computer controling it.

Something else i remembered was that when i shimmed the accumulators, i took it for a fang round the block in high box and was a bit dissapointed, but when i took it out in the mud and used low range, the difference was massive.

Never tried low box in the prado, If i was going to use it seriously offroad, I would just manualise it like the hilux is.

Mitsi Pajero 3.5V6 and 2.8 diesel use a mitsi variant of the A340F-30-40LE...

I'm thinking about adding a button for torque converter lockup to assist in engine braking on hill descents. I'm a bit worried that it will destroy the lockup clutch (since it's not normally ever locked up during engine overrun).

Anyone else done this?

(sorry for the thread jack).

I looked into doing that..
But didn't do it, not designed for that.. but some people have done it .
Especially those in the states running the AW4...
I think there are issues with line pressure as you are usually idling during hill descents and the pressure is low (no revs) its doesn't clamp fully or generates heat.
The lockup friction linings are not very big.

Have taken the plunge and ordered a valve body upgrade kit from Transgo.
