SU HIF 44 Carburettor Linkage Problems!!

Just got a few questions for the Landrover experts out there about the linkages on the later model SU HIF44 Carbs?

I was running the earlier model SU HIF 44 carbs and have just fitted a later model set last night to find that the linkage to the mainafold is different

Question I have are:

1. Is the early 3.5 inlet mainafold the same as the one used for the later model SU HIF44 Carbs?

2. Old carbs had a bad leak out the drivers side carb from the float bowl, am I better to fix this and refit them or go ahead and get the linkage sort for the later ones?

3. It looks like it's a Roller fitting that is missing, is this all I need and will it fit on the early inlet mainafold I'm running?

I have our Club trials next weekend and really would like to be there

Cheers
Brett

Where in the float chamber was the leak?

Did you check that the gasket isn't just gone?

I had a similar problem. The float pivot screw had come loose. It is at the bottom of the float bowl.

Spent most of Saturday trying to get the throttle linkage to work  In the end I re-fitted the older SU carbs (SU HIF6 I think)and got a seal kit to fix the leaking float base plates.

I did find out that the inlet manifold on Mudhog is one of the early 1973 ones which must have been off the original 3.5 motor as it has a 3.9 block now

When the 3.9 block was fitted, all the other bits went on it to make it look like the original motor.

The newer style SU HIF44 carbs must have a different inlet manifold as the SU's are deeper than the old Strombergs and rubbed on the rocker covers on the drivers side only

I'm going to try and set the newer SU HIF44 carbs up on the right manifold
before I try to fit them again.

The Hog is running again and for the first time in a while there is No smell of petrol from under the bonnet

My SUs have an insulator piece, like a black plastic spacer between the carbs and the manifold (factory fitted 3.5 v8 with twin SUs). It's about 8mm thick and the linkages won't line up without them. May cause them to foul on rocker covers as well. My rocker covers also have a cutout under each carb.

Don't know if that's any help.

Thanks Andy,

I have the black spacers and even got an extra set to see if that might help.

The cut out in the rocker cover just seems to be in the wrong place

I'm hopeing the newer manifold is slightly different the the old 1973 one I've got fitted now.
