Ignition wiring help

Post by 3VILC »

Well after lots of thinking..i'm still puzzled. Its a toyota 4Y carby with points distributor. Now whats got me confused is the wiring to the coil. There is wires from the loom connected to both coil + and -, and the wire from the distibutor is connected to the coil +. This is where I am stumped.. shouldnt there just be a positive feed to the coil from the loom, and the distribtor (points) wire should be just connected to coil - ??? Then I would pressume the other - wire is the tacho signal. Are my thoughts right..or have toyota in thier wisdom got it wired the other way? Tacho works, engine runs almost as well as i think it should.. And it has had a the body replaced so possible someone has wired it back in wrong. There is only the 1 wire into/out of distributor, so doesnt make sense to me that its connected to the + side of the coil..surely that would do nothing other than short thru the points.
Anyone got any thoughts? Or better a picture of the coil on thier 4Y/3Y? Before I start tutu'ing :P

coils wired backwards work but put out a weaker spark. no ballast resistor hooked up? negative should go to disi .

Yup thats what I thought. Yep its unbalasted. Im still confused how it even works with the input and the dizzy both connected to positive and earth thru the tacho only. I guess it still would with a very weak spark as coil would be energised all the time and points would do nothing. Unless the red wire is the tacho wire not the positive feed, in which case it would be just wired backwards. Might have to do some testing.

--Edit:
Scratch that..further investigation with a test meter reveals that the wire that appears to go to the dizzy actually goes towards the starter.. must be intended to be a ballast system and this would be the wire that bypasses the resistor when starting.. mystery solved lol
