'95 SWB Pajero 3.5 Disengage 4x4?

Hi Guys,
Hopefully someone could enlighten me... Bit of a noob when it come to anything mechanical and throw in the 4x4 equation and i get even more confused.
Anyway the rig is a '95 Pajero 3.5 SWB all standard that i mainly use for some 'shiny' offroading and towing the boat.
i was in a mates surf today and when he went from 4x4 to 2x4 there was a noticable 'clunk' - i questioned it and he assured me that was very normal... which leads me to my question - I cant notice the difference in 'feel' between 2x4 and 4x4 in the pajero. There certainly isnt any noise.
Should i be able too feel the difference? Should there be a noticable noise?
Also i suffer from the flashing lights syndrome but after reading posts here i didnt think much of it but now im starting to think that maybe im permanently driving in 4x4?!
Could this be why im experiencing even worse fuel economy than expected?
Any assistance on checks i could carry out would be appreciated
Cheers
