'95 SWB Pajero 3.5 Disengage 4x4?

Hi Guys,

Hopefully someone could enlighten me... Bit of a noob when it come to anything mechanical and throw in the 4x4 equation and i get even more confused.

Anyway the rig is a '95 Pajero 3.5 SWB all standard that i mainly use for some 'shiny' offroading and towing the boat.

i was in a mates surf today and when he went from 4x4 to 2x4 there was a noticable 'clunk' - i questioned it and he assured me that was very normal... which leads me to my question - I cant notice the difference in 'feel' between 2x4 and 4x4 in the pajero. There certainly isnt any noise.

Should i be able too feel the difference? Should there be a noticable noise?

Also i suffer from the flashing lights syndrome but after reading posts here i didnt think much of it but now im starting to think that maybe im permanently driving in 4x4?!

Could this be why im experiencing even worse fuel economy than expected?

Any assistance on checks i could carry out would be appreciated

Cheers

You won't feel the difference no. There is no bang or clunk. Sometimes if you are holding the 4WD lever you can just feel it if you continue to hold it when pulling back into 2H.

Most likely the flashing lights are that the front disconnect isn't disconnecting. Try sorting that out, its a great system when working properly. http://4wd.blogeasy.com/article.view.ru ... eID=318776

You will hardly notice any fuel difference between 2H & 4H. Just make sure the centre diff is unlocked before driving on the road.

The reason its thirsty is because its a heavy V6 4WD and your comparing it to a car :D

Hey mate,
I'm no mechanic but went through the mitzi flashing lights thing.

There's heaps of info on the web just search "mitzi flashing lights", and I asked a question on here also http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/Forums/ ... 24&t=28917

There should be no clunks going from 2H 4H 4HLc, and back. I select N or P to go into 4LLc.
I reckon I can hear things turning when in 4wd, but only just.

From what I hear the solenoids seem to be the most common cause, and I was able to sort mine just by giving them a clean out and a good dosing of CRC everywhere, and I took the rubber boot off the actuator shaft (On the front diff) just to confirm the sensors were working ok and to make sure everything was working as it should when 4h 2h etc was selected and the lights displaying correctly. Also pulled off the vaccum hoses to check for vaccum.

So yeah, depending on which ever way your's in not behaving, I'ld clean the solenoids first, and check then check the actuator shaft can slide in and out.
