just wondering what motor would be good to put on to hilux box off a 2.4 d for my new project .i can get holden v6 with loom and auto real cheap but what other options? i would prefer efi, is there any thing that is close to fitting . i have a mate with a wreckers so i can scrounge most stuff ,any ideas would help. off road only so will be making all my own mounts cheers.

Lexus 4.0 v8, cheap, reliable and has been done plenty of times, so plenty of info available. Supra 2.8l twin cam, very cool but pricier. Rover 3.5 or 3.9 v8. A guy in our club has put a Volvo penta boat v6 with twin rx7 turbos, intercooler and external wastegates and auto into a rover coiled Fj40. If its offroad only you can pretty much do whatever suits.

Not sure which planet it is that 2.8's are a cheaper swap than a lexus v8.
My supra swap owed me about $500 all up. (that's to drive it away and use it)

If you can get a reasonable V6 holden, for a good price, then do it. One of the boys we crawl with has 1, and it is ultra reliable, and not too heavy. Lexus is a good donk, but they are super heavy.
Of course that V8 sound is hard to beat

where did you do / get that done ??? ill do that to my lux now for that price ,screw work in the morning i want more power ......

For most people doing the Lexus swop its about $5000 all up by the time you've got motor, bellhousing or adapter, new loom, new computer (don't believe anyone who tells ya that you can use the orginal, it only works if you leave the 3speed auto in there ) oh and clutch flywheel and few other bits

The supra is a good option if you can find a manual one in your mates yard.... if not add about $400 to the price for one, a cheap sorce of these motors is the 2.8L auto Cressedia's all you need then is a clutch and flywheel.... should be able to do the conversion for under a grand even with buying a manual bellhousing... this would also be the easy'est option infact its just about bolt up even your engine mounts fit the 2.8 without mod the only bit of fab work you'll need to do is mounting eletric fans instead of the motor one as the an't room for it

Only know of one Holden conversion... went well, till he sold it spent to much on it and got forced to sell

Agree on the cost but I have been out 4wding with a few people running the factory computer with a manual now . So it can be done , no idea what they did thou .

I found this out the hard way I've got a lexus sitting on the floor here that I decided not to waste all the extra time & money on.... if there was a way to save the cost of the comp I'd be real happy

I'm not having a dig at you but I'd come to the conclusion, using the factory computer without the factory trans was an "urban myth" everybody knows somebody or of somebody who has done it... yet when I push for names or numbers nobody can remember

I'd come to the conclusion I was gona have to cough up for a loom and comp from CHCH not to bad, just 1 and a half times what I paid for the motor

As stated by Reece, the 5m/6m option is really simple. In my opinion the easiest bang for buck. I did mine about 41/2 years ago, (was the 4th or 5th conversion in the country at that time we have guessed at).
I paid $300 for a manual 2.8 Supra. So everything was there. The other $200 was for incidental shit, (mounts, fans, hoseclips, etc). Suprasurf sorted out the electrics (as he has done on so many other conversions in ChCh).

The only way to run a manual Lexus with a factory computer is to get one that had the dual computers, a separate computer for the auto and a separate computer for the motor.

Finding a 1UZFE with an intact loom, air flow meter and ignitors, the right sump and the right computer is difficult. There are plenty of cheap motor's around but they won't have everything you need.

By the time you add the cost of a loom, ignitors, AFM etc you can often get an older Link or similar for the same money.

There are quite a few Kiwi's on that site who have done 4x4 conversions.

One definite area where you need to spend money on the V8 over the S6 is cooling. The 4L pumps out the heat.

Add to that the V8 exhaust is not a cheap exercise.. the ol S6 slots straight up to the 2L exhaust... easy

True plus with the V8 you usually need a body lift and end up moving the gearbox forward which means modified front and rear driveshafts.

Still, hard to beat the sound of the quad cam screaming - it's wicked.
