80 series cruiser 12valve Front Mount Intercooler kits

Post by strx7 »

I have started to make these kits myself. Direct bolt in, comes with all mounting hardware, intercooler (450x230), hoses, pipes, clamps, inlet manifold adapter etc. The intercooler sits above a factory winch. Designed with TOWING in mind, this kit, along with a 3 inch exhuast system gained 37% peak HP and Torque on my landcruiser, low down in the rpm range upto 80% torque increase, this is running the same 10psi factory boost level, if you are running more than 10psi, you will gain even more. Have a dyno sheet if you wish to see it. This will also lower your EGT's a good chunk.
They can be fitted by anyone with a bit of mechanical know how. If you do your own Oil & air filter changes, you are capable of installing this kit.

I am selling these kits for $1000 + freight
PM Me or ask in here if you want more info or wish to get your hands on one.
I can install these too if you are in the tauranga area for an extra $50, takes a couple of hours.

Can also supply 3 inch exhuast systems for $1100 + freight, and can do a "combo" deal of IC kit & exhaust for $2030 + freight.

Really? Id be very intrigued for you to post a dyno graph because 37% is a shitload of an increase?

he gain through the midrange isn't as much as the gain low and top because my injector pump is having issues and needs a rebuild, with a good pump, the HP gain should be pretty much the same amount the whole way though.

we did a dyno run at 14psi but made no more power or torque than at 10psi because there was not enough fuel to support more than 10psi.

1HDT engines benefit hugely from basic upgrades.

Will post some pics tomorrow of the kit installed.

have had issues getting the right fitting for the boost line that goes into the inlet manifold flange so it will be another couple of days before the pics of it all installed are up.

I'd like to see how it all goes together.
How it looks.
Does it look factory or does it look like something that doesn't belong under the hood?
These are the things me and all the others are wondering.
By not responding or throwing pix up of the system isn't a good look for future sales.
(I bet if the notifications where working to tell him there's been responses to his thread he started, might help us all)

as soon as I find a 24V locally to be the test mule, I will do them for them aswell, the only difference will be the inlet manifold flange

But surely you have something for us? How it looked fitted before the dyno runs?

For the past 2 years i have been running a slightly smaller intercooler and I had been using mild steel exhaust tubing for the piping. It was in this state that the dyno run was done. the larger intercooler will take longer to heat up than the cooler i was using.
I took these pics tonight as i was putting it together, but started to run out of daylight so grabbed these pics before it got too dark.

I dont understand why people dont make another intake - all the B/R's down here have forward faced all of their Dastun Skyline ones - there are even Chinese companies making specific near copy's of other brand name ones
Couldnt be that hard to drop that yukky old intake

do you mean intake MANIFOLD? if so, it's probaly a cost vs price vs demand thing. aftermarket manifolds are pretty pricey, and i doubt in a cruiser they would gain much, the runners are very short, and to gain you would need runners alot longer due to the low rpm nature of these motors. runners about 4/5 times the std length would be great for altering the torque curve a bit but even then it probably wouldn't make that much difference.

you can see in the pic this kit includes a new inlet manifold elbow/flange

Nope, not enough gain for my effort & cost involved.
As stated, these have been designed with towing in mind, there are thousands of 12Valve 80 series used to tow boats, race cars and horse floats around NZ.
To do a efficent top mount kit, one would need to sort out ducting to the cooler and then cut a hole in the bonnet to suck air out thru the cooler and then out thru the bonnet, this would minimise the InterHeater effect that top mount intercoolers suffer from.

ducting thru the cooler that way aids with the engine bays natural air flow characteristics, where as putting a scoop and trying to force air into the engine bay through the bonnet, does result in less airflow through the radiator and other engine entering the engine bay from the front.

With the piping going over the engine wouldn't the pipe heat up and undo all the work the intercooler as done

Nope, the pipe is slightly warm to the touch on the outside after a drive, they are 2mm wall thickness aluminium, and that partically acts as a heat sheild for the the air flowing through the pipe, which when not on boost is only a couple of degrees above Ambient temperature.

Hi just a question, could you rotate the black bit that bolts to manifold and then only need the one 90deg and a bit less pipe also then it wouldnt run over the motor?

to has a 1 piece elbow in there it would have to be made very precisely, to clear the throttle cable which attaches to the side of that exact part (would be easier to make up from Cast aluminium, which would mean having to get it made elsewhere and the cost would be considerably more). the other thing would be that it would need
b) it would be a tight 90 degree bend going into the flare out flange which wouldn't flow as nicely, possibly wouldn't make a huge difference in these engines, but coming from a race car/trying to maximise flow/create less disturbance type back ground, I didn't even consider trying to do such a entry like that.

Is anyone running one of these kits? Am seriously looking at fitting one, and am keen to hear some feedback from someone who is using one.
Thanks
