LN130 front hub assembly and cv questions

Right front hub assembly is making a bad grinding noise, it's a little intermittent but really noisy so it's time to pull it all apart and see what's wrong.
In the parts bin I have a new outer CV and boot set and also a set of manual hubs (cheers Steve) so thought I would tear the front apart and fit all these.
I got the front CV and driveshafts out and I am contemplating pulling the flange from the diff and pressing out the studs and replacing them with bolts - anyone done this? How does the flange come out - persuasion?
How does the outer CV come off the drive shaft? On the new CV I can see it's splined so it looks like it should just pull off but I have tried a selection of hammers and it won't budge.
Also inside the wheel hub assembly where the outer shaft of the CV goes through, I assume this should be very clean inside? Mine has a reasonable amount of grit and dirt etc. How should this be cleaned?
With the front this far apart is it worth doing wheel bearings?
Sorry for all the questions.
Cheers
Matt.

the cv removal ..look for a circlip
and if youre clever enough you wont need to replace the studs with nuts and bolts ,you can get a decent gap with a block of wood (another words dont waste youre time)
with the hub just clean the crap out with some clean rags and apply some new fresh water resistant grease(pack in as much as you can )its a messy job but more grease = less water! ,and make sure when you put the drive cap on you either get another gasket fron toyota or just put some silicon on it
and i take it youre sorted with the wheel bearings?might be worth throwing a new set in while youre there.......

Thanks Krawlr.
When I refered to the grit inside the hub it's actually the wheel carrier assembly where the CV outer shaft slides through the centre.
I will remove all the grease from the old CV and see if I can find the circlip.

Hi.
For reassembly the following may help. (Thanks Supralux)

The hub is filled woth grease the rest is lubricated with grease but when I did mine everything was pretty clean. If you have it that far apart I would check the upper kingpin bearings as the uppers fail more often (read out of the grease).
You will need about 2 tubes of grease per side I used 5 both sides and all the grease points, and still have 1/2 tube in the gun.

This is what is causing your vibration noise. Mine is/was exactly the same. Both sides need to be lubricated and try to remove as much of the grit as possible using any means possible. I caked my CV shaft in grease and put quite a bit in either end before putting the CV back in. This is your only chance to lubricate in there when you have the CV's out so make sure you do it good

I'm not certain if you've got the CV to bits yet, you can but you'll need a new spring clip (cheap as chips at toyota)
Clamp the axle in a vice (use soft jaws or a rag) with the CV hanging out one end... use a brass drift onto the outer shell of the Birfield joint and belt it real hard you'll need a fair bit of push to cut the old spring clip (don't use a steel drift or the hammer onto the Birfield or you'll need a new one !!)
With the axle out you'll be able to rotate the bearing cage out far enough to remove the balls when you've got them all out.... the center piece will fall out, then the cage, look for a couple of larger holes in it turn these up and down and use these to help you clear the "teeth" in the birfield shell
Give it a real good clean!! any grit you leave in there in there is gona act like grinding paste, look for pitting on the balls and where they run if there is any bin the CV... noticed a guy selling them cheap on trademe, if you want I could price them up for ya
To put it back together just reverse the above and pack the birfield with as much grease as you can make certain you have the center piece the right way round

there is a wee shamfer leading in to the axle splines on the outside
when your ready to put the axle back in put the spring clip in the grove... clamp the CV in the vice and slide the axle in till the spring clip binds into the chamfer use a small screwdriver to push the spring clip into its grove as you push down on the axle when it goes in the axle will drop down... push the axle all the way through when the spring clip gets out teh other side it will pop out and lock the axle into the CV

All ready for another go
Hope this helps
Cheers Reece

Old cv removed okay and new CV fitted up to the old axle.
I have cleaned out the wheel carrier assembly, specifically the area where the CV shaft slides through. This was quite dirty and dry.
I have cleaned it up and greased it and test fitted the axle.
The brass bushings that the CV axle rides on/in are quite sloppy.
Anyone know how much play there should be in these? It seems excessive to me.
