common things after putting larger tyres on

Post by JimmyRabid »

Just fitted 33" bighorns on the weekend to the surf with just a 2" suspension lift and torsion bars wound up a bit to match. I've got a bit of rub after I took the front mud guards off and gave it tap on the drivers side only on full lock, passenger side seems fine but hear/feeling a very slight shudder on the front passenger side when changing down from 2nd to 1st and stopping. Any idea what this could be??. Taking it in for a wheel alignment this weekend... brakes feel a bit dull also compared to the 31's I was running. Anything else I should be looking out for after raising/ fitting new tyres? Oh its only been driven on road so far apart form when I tested it off road to see what the rub was like.

It would pay to check the idler arm every now and then as they are poorly designed/assembled and are week so with the lift the link down to the wheel will push the arm up towards the chasis with side load and with 33s theres more leverage and this all throws the alignment out thus eating your new tyres

Bigger tread equals less (dull) brakes as they have a bigger moving mass to pull up. Chuck some recovery hooks on the wish list along with some strops / snatch ropes and a high lift jack / hand winch. Sooner or later u will be caught out with ur new 33s on there. By the way, IFS surfs are a cool 4wd

haha wish list is getting longer everyday lol, yea it'll take a while but I planing to make this a pretty solid surf, locker is next on the list. As I've been asked before "do you what this to look cool or go places" aaah go places

Is there a way to make up for less braking power eg better after-market brakes or something?

bigger tyres steal your brakeing but 33 inch tyres shouldnt have much of an effect on a surf, might be worth giving the brakes a check over and make sure you havent got a any seized pistons in the callipers, proportioning valve and back brakes are working and adjusted properly etc, uneven pad wears usually a sign of seized pistons, for stronger brakes search VH40 or VH44 remote boosters but you shouldnt need one for those tyres?

get rid of the useless drums on the back it a pretty good start. Idler arm is cheap and easy to replace, don't stuff around with second hand they are cheap enough direct from toyota.

Can I look kool and go places?? Yeah go buy an SJ, rides a bit rough tho.
What model you got, with toymota its as easy as buying and bolting up the later mod bits so I herd. I assume the bits quoted prev are larger master cyl for the brakes = more force applied to the stop bits for the same pedal power. Question the VH prefix, is that the landy code by any chance?

VH is the Aussie PBR prefix, they make brake componants and all that sort of shit

If you have raised ya rear 50mm you will need to move you brake proportional valve rod up 50mm as well ....as your rear is now 50mm higher there will be a lot less braking in the rear as the valve is stopping more of the fliud going to the rear drums..
Very easy to do.just make up a bracket to move it further up from the panhard rod.

do you think the proportional valve postion could be causing the shudder as I come to a stop? as I've just read problems with the valve can load the front brakes up to make up for the rear brakes being weak?

valve is there to give less brakes and stop the rear locking up when unloaded and add more braking when the trucks loaded. I removed the valve altogether and couldn't lock up the rear before the front no matter how hard i tried so figured I didn't need it
Performance weight reduction.

It was the only way i could slow my truck down fast enough to pass tests but it was a supra powered hilux on 36 simexs. I would argue that my hilux had way less weight in the rear than your surf so you need the valve even less.

Hey I'm pretty sure the shuddering you're feeling just as you come to a dead stop is just the tyres and they will settle in after the tread edges have worn a little as I have the same tyres and been through the same issues. I also felt it in the rear in two wheel drive on heavy takeoff but this also settled after they wore down a bit.
+1 on the rear drums especially after a dip in the bog
+1 on the steering idler, got to replace mine before next weekend after bending it up even further till it now hits the chassis. Have read about strengthening this but am usure if that might move the problem on to another component and yep they are relatively cheap......$200 new from toyota, $120 toyota spares and $40ish on trademe.
