Hi guys today i had to drop my 95 diesel into low ratio once out of the soft stuff i went back to 4x4 hi ratio all was gud.
When i got back to the tar seal road i shifted into 2 WD hi but it wont come out of 4 wd in fact it feels like the shiftier wont go far enough forward to pull it out of 4 WD any suggestions im totally stumped its not a simple fix like my Terrano buy by the look of things under neath

If you've been driving on a reasonably hard surface, it winds up enough tension that the load on the gears makes it really hard to shift. Often putting it in reverse and backing up a bit with pressure on the lever will shift it, or get into some soft mud or gravel. Otherwise, jack up a wheel, but be ready for it to spin as the weight comes off....

X2. If its a manual, get on your lawn (where the mrs wont see). select reverse and dump the clutch while holding pressure on the lever, had this happen in a couple of my 4wds, or as suggested, jack up one wheel SLOWLY so the wheel can still semi grip the ground to slow the spinning. cheers

Ive backed up over 50 meters n nothing happened but ill try the jacking up tomorrow.
Its an auto box.

Also, I think the auto box has to be in "N" to move it. The linkage may be a little out, so try jiggling it between D - N - R - P if it still won't move after jacking it up...

i dont know about holden design but i have had bits of wood jamb up inbetween the linkages stopping the lever from moving

I went under it as soon as i found it was stuck just in case that had happened but its all clear under there nothing at all

back to what the others above have sais then transmission wind up by the sounds of it

If you can't get it out - at least unlock the front hubs when you let the tension go. Otherwise it'll wind up to the point it'll either break something or immobilise the truck. If you've got auto hubs then don't don't drive it unless you remove the front driveshaft.

I had to rescue a guy in an armoured GMC truck back in my Army days with the UN in Bosnia who did this. About 7 tonnes and a 454cu in V8 wouldn't move it. Not very comfortable in no-mans-land being watched by drunk gun-happy Serbs while jacking up a wheel... Bloody Dutch git driving!

You dont have 2 different ratio diffs by any chance do you?

As far as i can see it has the original diffs front n rear

arent the front isuzu axles vac activated? or what am i thinking

what about tyres??

differant tyre brands have differant circumferances even thou they have the same numbers on the side walls

Its more about releasing the pressure to let the gears disengage.

The center diff lock in my 80 can be like this and its not how far backwards you go but the release of pressure on the gears that lets them disengage.

I have to reverse a little and hold pressure on the transfer case lever in the 40 to get it out of 4x4 sometimes. Often pops out as I back off the throttle in reverse (with light pressure on lever).

I had this and it turned out it was the transfer full of water and it was well shagged (from previous owner)

All gud now tnx guys finally got around to the jacking up thing n it worked a treat tnx for the reply's there's a few there that i didn't think of
