5m into yn60 surf

Post by You Get That »

Ive got a solid front axle surf its a 85 with a 3y in it and I can pick up a toyota cressida with a 5m in it for cheap the only problem is its a auto. can I get the engine bolt it up to my gearbox and bellhouseing (its a G52) and wire it in or do I need a manual wireing loom?
cheers guys ive been reading up on this for a while and just need some answers.

Do the old 5m autos have a auto computer? No the auto bell housing wont fit your g52 sorry. You need to find a manual bell housing.
Someone here will probably pipe up but I sure that the A34? auto (surf) will bolt up with 5m bellhousing. Could be wrong?

we wired a 5M auto to work with a surf manual box, fair bit of shagging around but we got there.... hardest part was finding a wiring diagram to suit the ECU etc..... PM GAZA on here, he did most of it himself :)

for the price your better to find a donor car with a 5m, 6m pr 7m in it and swap the lot over as you need it. There are some good wiring diagrams to splice the looms that some guys on here have done when you get to that point.

A bit of old school engineering about to begin :P
You really need to find a manual one to do the repower, otherwise to find the bellhousing required is a major mission these days.
I had a 5m in a Surf for a few years and had a lot of fun, but they are getting old and there are better conversions around these days for similar money invested, with any conversion it's not just the engine, you always have wiring, exhaust, radiator, cert etc, and all the little things add up to a lot of money.
I've got a hilux single cab i've started to do, donor motor is a 3rz manual, i've gone this route as these motors punch above their weight (more HP than a 5m) are light, being a 4cyl they are short so fit in a hilux or surf well, were desinged for larger vehicle so have a good sized flywheel for 4x4's, and of course the 3rz bellhousing will bolt up to a g or w series trans
Anyway choice is yours at the end of the day, the 5m's always sounded great at full revs :!:
Mike Holland years back stated the whole 5m thing down here, here's an oldie but a goodie :P

Always brings a tear to my eye the screaming supras vid Tim
I still find it hard to believe the thrashing thos engines endured our right boots.
At the time we were doing those transplants (10 - 11 yrs ago) they were incredible bang for buck swaps. But nowadays there are better options I reckon. I still think the commonwhore V6 is a great engine transplant in the hilux. Even though I have never had one, I came this close before the 5.0ltr became available.
Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!

Thanks for the help guys sounds like i need to find a manual 5m if i want to do the swap.
Now after reading about the 3rz i like the sound of them but the base cost of the motor is around the $1500 mark and the toyota cressida with the 5m in it i found was $400 for the whole car
O well i will have to think about it.

i had a 6m it was great. Simex's and rooster tailes were pretty fun but the novelty wore off a bit when i was using 5 tanks of gas and mates were using 1 tank of diesel on the same trips. I'm not saying dont put one in but make sure you think about what you are going to do with the truck and the pro's and con's that go with it.

a mate of mine brought mikes old truck. Now i still have the 37s off it. the rest off the truck got wrecked and the parts went in to a tidy 87 surf with an 85 beam axle chassis under it.

i also had a 5m surf there isnt any thing out there that can compete for sound.
